This
Villefranche trip is a popular excursion for those who want to focus their time visiting Monaco and Monte Carlo. Your driver-guide takes you to the old town of Monaco to see the royal palace of Monaco and the Cathedral. Then you enjoy time in central Monte Carlo, near the famous Casino of Monte Carlo and its gardens.
Monaco is a 371 acre principality with a population of 30,000 people located on the Mediterranean Sea between southeastern France and northwestern Italy. Within the principality you find the modern city of Monte Carlo and the old town of Monaco which is perched between the cliffs and the sea. This is the home to the rich and famous and high rise condominiums fill your vision and streets buzz with luxury cars. In late May the famous Grand Prix of Monte Carlo takes place here.
After meeting your driver-guide you travel along the Upper Corniche until you reach the old town of Monaco. The Grimaldi Family acquired the lordship of Monaco in the 1300's, and have ruled over the city ever since. The title Prince or Princess of Monaco has since been given to their heirs. Albert II of Monaco is the current head of the family. His late mother, Grace Kelly was killed in a car accident here in 1982. Also famous are his sisters, Caroline and Stephanie.
The 13th Century fortress was turned into the royal residence in the 15th Century. In addition to photographing the palace, many people like to be here for changing of the guard which takes place each day at 11:55 AM. If you would like to see the changing of the guard we recommend a tour start time between 10 and 10:30 AM.
You can enjoy strolling the tiny lanes filled with cafes and shops on your way to the the Cathedral where Princess Grace is buried. Please note that bare shoulders and sport shorts are not permitted in the cathedral.
If you have been to these places before, you might prefer some time in the exotic gardens of Monaco which are located very near the palace and the cathedral.
Heading back to Monte Carlo you drive along the path of the legendary Grand Prix Formula 1 circuit. Then there is a stop at the gardens of the Casino which allows you to experience the unbelievable luxury of this unique place! You will have time to see designer shops, luxury hotels and the famous Casino. If you would like to visit the interior of the Casino, please see the notes below.
