Touring in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of Europe's most distinctive and walkable cities — a UNESCO-listed canal ring lined with 17th-century merchant houses, world-class museums, and a creative energy that blends Golden Age heritage with a thoroughly modern outlook. For cruise passengers, Amsterdam is both a port of call and a major turnaround port for Northern Europe and transatlantic itineraries, meaning many visitors are here for a single port day while others have pre- or post-cruise nights in the city. A private Amsterdam tour adapts to both scenarios: your guide meets you at the cruise terminal, at the port of IJmuiden, or at the lobby of your Amsterdam hotel, and builds the day around the sights, museums, and experiences that matter most to you.

Beyond the city center, the Dutch countryside is remarkably close and offers some of the most iconic images of the Netherlands — the historic windmills of Zaanse Schans, the cheese markets and wooden shoe workshops of the Zaanstreek region, and the traditional fishing villages of Volendam, Marken, and Edam on the shores of the former Zuiderzee. These countryside excursions make an excellent half-day addition to a city tour or a rewarding full-day alternative for guests who have already explored Amsterdam's museums. We also offer private IJmuiden shore excursions and private transfers between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam's cruise terminals.

Frequently Asked Questions — Amsterdam Shore Excursions & Tours

Where do cruise ships dock in Amsterdam?

Cruise ships dock at one of two locations. Amsterdam's Passenger Terminal (PTA) is located right in the city center on the IJ waterway, within walking distance of Centraal Station and the main canal ring — one of the most convenient cruise dockings in Europe. However, some larger vessels dock at the port of IJmuiden, a sea lock port on the North Sea coast about 30 km (30 minutes) west of the city center. Your Private Shore Trips guide and driver will meet you at whichever terminal your ship uses and handle the transfer into Amsterdam.

Can I start my tour from my hotel instead of the cruise port?

Yes. All of our Amsterdam tours can begin and end at your hotel, Airbnb, or any other address in the Amsterdam area. This is especially popular with pre- and post-cruise guests staying in the city before or after their sailing. Your guide and driver will meet you in your hotel lobby at the agreed time. The same tours, guides, and vehicles are available whether you are starting from a ship or a hotel — the only difference is the pick-up point.

What are the must-see sights in Amsterdam?

The essential Amsterdam highlights include the Van Gogh Museum (the world's largest collection of his work), the Rijksmuseum (home to Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's Milkmaid), the Anne Frank House, a canal cruise through the UNESCO-listed canal ring, Dam Square and the Royal Palace, the Jordaan neighborhood with its boutiques and brown cafés, and the Albert Cuyp street market. Most private half-day tours cover three or four of these comfortably, while a full-day tour can include a canal cruise and a countryside excursion as well.

Do I need advance tickets for the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House?

Yes — both museums operate on timed-entry tickets that frequently sell out days or even weeks in advance, especially during the summer cruise season. The Anne Frank House in particular releases tickets in small batches and they go almost immediately. When you book a private Amsterdam tour with us, we coordinate timed-entry reservations as part of your tour planning so you don't have to worry about availability or timing. Your guide will build the day's itinerary around your confirmed museum slots.

What is the Traditional Holland countryside tour?

Our Traditional Holland tour takes you outside Amsterdam to experience the iconic Dutch countryside. The itinerary typically includes the windmills of Zaanse Schans — a living museum village with working 17th- and 18th-century windmills — along with a traditional wooden clog workshop, a cheese-making demonstration, and a visit to one or more of the charming villages along the former Zuiderzee, such as Volendam with its fishing harbor and traditional costumes, the island village of Marken, or the cheese town of Edam. The entire excursion runs about four hours and can be combined with a city walking tour for a full-day experience.

What is the back-to-ship guarantee?

Our back-to-ship guarantee means that if an unforeseen delay during your private tour prevents you from returning to the cruise terminal before your ship departs, we will arrange and cover the cost of transportation to your next port of call. This guarantee applies to all private shore excursions booked through us in Amsterdam and IJmuiden.
