Touring in Reykjavik

Reykjavik is the northernmost capital in the world and the starting point for Iceland's most extraordinary natural landscapes. Cruise ships arriving here put you within striking distance of the famous Golden Circle — a route that packs erupting geysers, a thundering two-tiered waterfall, and the rift valley where the world's oldest parliament was founded into a single unforgettable day. Beyond the Golden Circle, the Reykjanes Peninsula offers volcanic craters, steaming geothermal fields, and lava formations stretching to the horizon. A private Reykjavik shore excursion lets you cover far more ground than a ship-organized bus tour, with the flexibility to linger where the landscape moves you and a knowledgeable Icelandic guide who can put the geology, history, and sagas into context. Private Shore Trips also offers private shore excursions from Akureyri and Ísafjörður for cruises that visit multiple Icelandic ports.

Frequently Asked Questions — Reykjavik Shore Excursions

Where do cruise ships dock in Reykjavik?

Cruise ships dock at Skarfabakki pier in the Sundahöfn harbor area, about 3 km east of downtown Reykjavik. Some smaller vessels may dock at the Old Harbour (Miðbakki) right in the city center. Skarfabakki has a basic terminal building, but there is little within walking distance aside from the pier itself. Your Private Shore Trips guide will be waiting at the terminal exit with a name sign and private vehicle, ready to head directly to the Golden Circle or your chosen itinerary.

What is the Golden Circle?

The Golden Circle is Iceland's most famous sightseeing route, a roughly 300 km loop from Reykjavik that visits three iconic natural sites. Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly pull apart — and where Iceland's parliament, the Althing, was founded in 930 AD. The Geysir geothermal area is home to Strokkur, a geyser that erupts a column of boiling water up to 30 meters into the air every 5 to 8 minutes. Gullfoss (Golden Falls) is a massive two-tiered waterfall that plunges 32 meters into a narrow canyon. All three sites are included in our private Golden Circle shore excursion.

How long does the Golden Circle tour take?

Our private Golden Circle shore excursion runs approximately 7 to 8 hours, which allows comfortable time at each stop without the rushed pace of a large group bus tour. The driving distance is about 300 km round trip from the cruise port, with the time split roughly evenly between scenic driving and stops at the three main sites. Your guide can adjust the pace and add stops based on your interests — common additions include the Kerið volcanic crater, the Friðheimar greenhouse, or a stop to photograph Icelandic horses.

Can I visit the Blue Lagoon on a Reykjavik shore excursion?

The Blue Lagoon is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 45 minutes from the Skarfabakki cruise terminal. It is possible to include a Blue Lagoon visit in your port day, but it requires advance booking as the lagoon operates on timed entry tickets that frequently sell out. If you are interested, let us know when you book and we can check availability and build it into a custom itinerary. Keep in mind that combining the Blue Lagoon with the full Golden Circle makes for a very long day — most guests choose one or the other.

What should I wear on an Iceland shore excursion?

Iceland's weather is famously unpredictable — sun, rain, wind, and even snow can all occur within a single afternoon, regardless of the season. We recommend layering: a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm fleece or down mid-layer, and a waterproof, windproof outer jacket. Sturdy walking shoes with good grip are essential, especially at Gullfoss and Þingvellir where paths can be wet and uneven. A hat, gloves, and a scarf are useful even in summer, as temperatures at the waterfall and geothermal areas can feel significantly cooler than in Reykjavik.

What is the back-to-ship guarantee?

Our back-to-ship guarantee means that if an unforeseen delay during your private tour prevents you from returning to the cruise terminal before your ship departs, we will arrange and cover the cost of transportation to your next port of call. This guarantee applies to all private shore excursions booked through us in Reykjavik.
