The three main Golden Circle sites - Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area with the erupting Strokkur geyser, and Gullfoss waterfall - form a rough circuit about 2 to 3 hours from the capital by private vehicle. Isafjordur is the most remote and visually dramatic of the three Iceland cruise ports. The Westfjords were largely cut off from the rest of Iceland until a road tunnel opened in 1996 and even now feel genuinely remote. Dynjandi waterfall, the highlight of the region, fans out from a peak 330 feet above the fjord in a series of cascades unlike any other waterfall in Iceland. The Arctic Fox Center is the only institution in the world dedicated to researching Iceland's only native land mammal. This is the port for guests who want Iceland beyond the tourist circuit.

Iceland's weather is famously unpredictable at any time of year - the local saying is that if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. Even in summer, temperatures can drop quickly and wind and rain can arrive without warning. The essential kit is a warm base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Sturdy walking shoes with good grip are important for volcanic terrain, waterfall viewpoints, and uneven coastal paths. A hat and gloves are worth packing even in June and July. Your guide will advise on conditions specific to that day's tour.

Northern Lights visibility depends on three factors - darkness, clear skies, and solar activity. Iceland cruises typically run in summer when nights are extremely short or nonexistent, which means Northern Lights are not visible during the main cruise season regardless of other conditions.
