Pula is the largest city in Istria and home to the best-preserved ancient monument in Croatia, the Pula Arena. Built between 27 BC and 68 AD when Pula was the Roman colony of Pietas Julia, the amphitheater is the sixth largest Roman arena still standing and one of the only ones to retain all four of its corner towers, with room for 23,000 spectators in its day. The old town surrounding the Arena also holds the Roman Forum and the Temple of Augustus. About 34 kilometers and 35 to 40 minutes from Pula, the coastal town of Rovinj sits above the Lim Channel, a 10 kilometer flooded limestone canyon locally called a fjord, where a Benedictine hermit is said to have lived in a cave at its far end in the 11th century.
