Marseille Shore Excursion

This full day Marseille shore trip visits the top sites in Marseille including Notre Dame de la Garde. Then you travel inland to the charming and popular town of of Aix en Provence where you have time to enjoy the old town.

After meeting you driver guide you'll start your private tour driving past Le Panier, the oldest district of Marseille, with its narrow winding streets. This is where the Greeks settled 26 centuries ago. Soon you reach your first stop, the impressive Palais Longchamps. This beautiful water fountain was built under the reign of Napoleon III and was designed by one of the great architects of Marseille. Your next stop is Le Vieux Port, or the Old Port, where the sea enters the town's embrace. You'll have a chance to walk the bustling outdoor fish market and see the vendors selling local handicrafts or the flower market (depending on the day of the week).

Then you drive to one of the most impressive locations in Marseille, Notre Dame de la Garde. This striking cathedral sits on the highest point in Marseille and from it you'll have stunning views over the whole city. Locals consider this church the guardian of the city.

Next you'll take a drive along the coastal road of Marseille named after John F. Kennedy and then you'll stop at a typical old fishing port, le Vallon des Auffes, where you can soak up the local atmosphere and see the small fishing boats in the tiny harbor.

Free time is provided for you to enjoy a typical lunch from Marseille (meal not included). We recommend that you consider Bouillabaisse, which is Marseille's most famous dish. This two course meal includes fish soup followed by the fish that was used to make the soup. If you are interested in trying this local specialty, advance reservations are required, please inquire with us at the time of your tour reservation.

After lunch you drive further into Provence until you reach Aix en Provence. Upon arrival you visit the Cours Mirabeau which dates to the 17th century. This beautiful tree lined street is world famous and is known for its monumental fountain and popular cafes. Next you enjoy free time in the Old Town of Aix en Provence which is mostly pedestrian streets with lovely stone buildings, churches, museums, shops and boutiques.

In addition to seeing several wonderful fountains you will also notice the many bell towers which are made of wrought iron because the strong winds, known as the Mistral. If they were made from solid stone they would be toppled by the force of the winds.

If you are visiting on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday you can enjoy the open-air street market where cheeses, olives, produce, fruits, flowers, knick-knacks and other goods can be found. Aix is also well known as the home of impressionist artist Cezanne. You will see images us paintings in many shops throughout the old town. Please note that most shops in France are closed on Sundays.

When your visit to Aix en Provence is finished, your driver guide will bring you back to the Marseille port or your hotel.
