This is the most popular Naples shore trip of the region. You drive along the famous and dramatic Amalfi coastline where every turn reveals new vistas. Stops include Positano and Amalfi to take in their beauty. Then you visit the fascinating archaeological site of Pompeii.
After meeting you driver guide at the pier in Naples you immediately depart for the Amalfi Coast which stretches about 50 miles from the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula to the city of Salerno. This drive is famous for its amazing views of quaint fishing villages and luxury hotels that cling to the cliffs above the sparkling blue sea. With each hairpin turn of the road you'll be astonished by another vista. You'll drive the most popular and dramatic portion of the coastline from Positano to Amalfi, which can easily take 3 hours (pending traffic).
Your first stop is the town of Positano, one of the most popular resort towns in the world. Narrow streets which are sometimes no more than staircases are lined with shops and caf̩s leading from the main road to the beautiful beaches below.
Next you stop in Amalfi, which legend says, was created by Hercules to be the most beautiful setting possible for the final resting place of a beautiful nymph he loved. History tells us that the Romans built the town in the 5th century AD.
You have time to have lunch (meal not included) in one of these towns.
This afternoon you leave the coast and drive to Pompeii where you time to explore the site with audio guides. Pompeii was once a major port, as well as a center of wealth and politics. When Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the city was almost instantly buried beneath 30 feet of volcanic ash and cinder. A huge part of the bay was also filled in with debris during the disaster, leaving the ruined metropolis some distance from today's shoreline.
This ancient site is perhaps the most famous archaeological excavation in the world. Buried for 1,700 years, the town has been resurrected and presents a clear picture of daily life in ancient times. At the height of its influence, 20,000 people lived in Pompeii, and it is estimated that 2,000 of them perished instantly when volcanic ash rained down on the city.
