La Rochelle Shore Excursion
This half day La Rochelle shore trip visits Brouage, which is formally listed as one of France's most charming villages. After your visit to Brouage you go to a nearby Oyster Farm where you enjoy an Oyster tasting along with a glass of white wine.
After meeting your driver-guide at La Rochelle pier, you start the shore trip with a drive to Brouage which is located between Rochefort, La Rochelle and the island of Oleron.
Originally the town was located on the Atlantic ocean but over the centuries the water level has gone down, creating a marsh around the village. During medieval times the town was a hub for salt production but the need eventually went away. Due to wars, a walled fortification was added around the village, which makes it quite unique today.
Your guide will provide a Brouage walking tour where you learn about its history and the fortifications. After the walking tour there is free time to have lunch, explore and visit some of the local craft shops.
Later today you drive to an Oyster farms and the oyster beds which are located around the Seudres River Valley and the Island of Oléron. This area produces more oysters than any other in Europe. At the oyster farm you will learn how and where the oysters are grown and how tides and ocean currents affect this industry. After learning about the production you enjoy an oyster tasting session along with a glass of white wine.
If you enjoy the tastings, you will be welcomed to enjoy more oysters and wine (additional purchases are not included in tour price).
At the end of this La Rochelle shore trip you will be brought back to La Rochelle pier.
