TOUR DESCRIPTION

Godafoss & Dettifoss Waterfalls Shore Excursion from Akureyri / 7 Hours

This Akureyri shore trip explores two of Iceland's famous waterfalls, referred to as the Beauty and the Beast. After visiting the Godafoss and Detifoss waterfalls you enjoy a visit to Lake Myvatn including Dimmuborgir, the Hverir geothermal area and Skutustadagigar.

After meeting your guide in Akureyri you start the journey towards Lake Myvatn. About half way there is a stop at the Godafoss waterfall which is one of the most stunning in all of Iceland. The name of the falls means, waterfall of the Gods, and your guide will explain the legend which brought this name. The falls are about 40 feet high and 100 feet wide. This waterfall is often referred to as the Beauty.

Your next stop is the Detifoss Waterfall which is known as the Beast. The falls are more than 300 feet wide and about 225 feet tall making it Europe's second most powerful waterfalls.

After this magical visit you continue on the Lake Myvatn, the fourth largest lake in Iceland. This lake and the sites nearby are one of Iceland's best natural attractions. Bird watchers are in for a treat as there is an abundant birdlife here and more species of ducks than anywhere in the world.

The lake has many small islands, some of which are pseudocraters, formed by steam explosions and boiling lava. These unique islands are known as Skutustadagigar.

Close to the lake is Dimmuborgir, a fascinating area of unusual shaped lava formations and volcanic caves. This area is referred to as the Dark Cities and your guide will explain where these reference came from.

Finally is a stop at Hverir, located at the foot of the Namafjall volcanic mountain. This geothermal area includes fumaroles, mud pools, steam vents and sulfur pits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Godafoss and Detifoss nicknamed 'the Beauty and the Beast'?
Godafoss, the Beauty, is a graceful, curved horseshoe-shaped falls, around 40 feet high and 100 feet wide. Detifoss, the Beast, is a different experience altogether: a genuinely thunderous, powerful drop over 300 feet wide, widely cited as Europe's second most powerful waterfall by volume after the Rhine Falls.
What is Lake Myvatn known for besides the waterfalls?
It's Iceland's fourth-largest lake and one of the country's best spots for birdwatching, plus you'll see Dimmuborgir's dramatic lava formations, the bubbling Hverir geothermal area, and the pseudo-craters at Skutustadagigar, all within the same stop.
How much driving is involved in a 7-hour tour?
A fair amount; Lake Myvatn and the waterfalls are spread across North Iceland's countryside, so this is a driving-based tour with stops along the way rather than a single walkable site. Your private guide handles the driving and narrates the route.
Is this tour good for people interested in Icelandic folklore, not just scenery?
Yes, Godafoss itself comes with a legend attached: its name means 'waterfall of the gods,' tied to the story of Iceland's lawspeaker throwing pagan idols into the falls around the year 1000 AD, when Christianity became the country's official religion. Your guide shares that story on site.
Is this a private tour?
Yes, private with a licensed English-speaking guide and vehicle for the full day.

We did enjoy ourselves and I would highly recommend your tour company to anyone. The driver was really nice and very efficient getting us to all of the places that we wanted to see in the short time that we were in London. The guide was quite knowledgeable and friendly.

A fantastic day exploring London!

All of our guides were incredibly knowledgeable and kept us entertained with fascinating stories. The Tower of London was a highlightseeing the Crown Jewels up close was unforgettable! We also got great views of Big Ben and Parliament before stopping for a traditional pub lunch, which was delicious. Iceland was also breathtaking - guides were great and were more like friends at the end of the tours. Highly recommended all!
