Piraeus is the largest cruise port in the eastern Mediterranean and the gateway to Athens, sitting about 20 minutes southwest of the city centre. Most guests head straight for the Acropolis and the ancient Agora on our Highlights of Athens tour, then explore the Plaka neighbourhood below - Athens' oldest quarter, filled with tavernas, street markets and Byzantine churches. The New Acropolis Museum, opened in 2009, houses the original Parthenon sculptures.

Beyond central Athens, a full port day opens up outstanding day trips - our Cape Sounion tour visits the clifftop Temple of Poseidon, our Highlights of Corinth tour visits the archaeological site of Ancient Corinth, and for longer port calls our Ancient Delphi tour and Mycenae and Epidaurus tour are both available as full-day excursions. Your guide holds a licensed credential issued by the Greek Ministry of Tourism, required by law at all archaeological sites in Greece. Frequently Asked Questions - Piraeus / Athens Shore Excursions

Where do cruise ships dock in Piraeus?

Cruise ships dock at one of several terminals in the port of Piraeus - typically the main cruise terminal area along the eastern quay. There is no tendering. Your licensed guide and private driver will meet you at the ship with a name sign. The drive to central Athens and the Acropolis takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Is there enough time to see the Acropolis on a port day?

Yes. With a typical 8 to 10 hour port call, you can comfortably visit the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, the Plaka, and one or two additional sites such as the Panathenaic Stadium or the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Your guide uses skip-the-line entry where available and manages the schedule so you are back at the ship on time.

Can I visit Cape Sounion from Piraeus?

Yes. Cape Sounion is about 70 kilometers southeast of Athens and takes roughly 90 minutes by private vehicle along the scenic Athens Riviera coastal road. Most guests combine a morning in Athens with an afternoon drive to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, returning via the coastal route. It works well on a full port day.

Do I need a licensed guide in Athens?

Greek law requires a licensed guide at all major archaeological sites including the Acropolis, Ancient Corinth, Delphi, Epidaurus and Mycenae. All of our Athens guides hold credentials issued by the Greek Ministry of Tourism. This ensures expert commentary and skip-the-line access at key monuments.

Can I visit Delphi or the Peloponnese from Piraeus?

Delphi is about two and a half hours northwest of Athens and requires a longer port day or a pre/post-cruise overnight. Ancient Corinth and the Corinth Canal are closer - roughly one hour west - and can be combined with Mycenae or Epidaurus on a full-day excursion. Your guide will recommend what fits your ship's schedule.

What is the back-to-ship guarantee on Piraeus shore excursions?
