Kotor Old Town is a remarkably intact medieval fortified city at the head of the Bay of Kotor - a fjord-like inlet of the Adriatic enclosed by the Dinaric Alps. The town was developed under Venetian rule from 1420 to 1797 and retains its Venetian street plan, Gothic and Baroque palaces, and the Church of St. Tryphon dating from 1166. The fortress walls climb 1,350 meters up the hillside above the town to the fortress of St. John - a climb of approximately 1,300 steps that takes about 45 minutes but rewards with panoramic views over the Bay of Kotor. The entire Bay of Kotor was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The bay stretches 28 kilometers inland and is the deepest natural harbour on the Adriatic coast.

Our Lady of the Rocks is a Roman Catholic church on an artificial island in the Bay of Kotor, approximately 15 kilometers northwest of Kotor Old Town - about 20 minutes by private vehicle and a short boat crossing from the village of Perast. According to tradition, the island was created by local sailors who vowed to build a church on the reef where they found an icon of the Madonna in 1452, and expanded it over centuries by sinking their own ships and dropping stones into the bay after each successful voyage. The church interior is lined with 68 silver votive tablets and 2,500 square meters of embroidered fabric created by women of Perast over 25 years using threads drawn from their own hair as they aged. Perast itself is a village of Baroque palaces built by wealthy sea captains during the Venetian period.

Yes. Budva is approximately 35 kilometers south of Kotor - about 40 minutes by private vehicle along the coastal road. Budva has its own walled medieval old town on a small peninsula jutting into the Adriatic, with beaches on either side. The town was founded by Phoenicians and has been continuously inhabited for over 2,500 years - one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast.
