This full day Toulon shore trip visits three towns in Provence: the fishing village of Sanary-sur-Mer, the hilltop village of Le Castellet, and the seaside resort of Cassis. This tour is our most popular itinerary in southern Provence.
After meeting your driver guide you'll start with a visit to the fishing village of Sanary-sur-Mer. You have a chance to explore the daily market, once voted the most beautiful market in France. The town's atmosphere is distinctive, with colorful wooden boats floating in the harbor that are a familiar sight along the southern Provence coast.
You'll experience the relaxed pace of local life, listening to the southern accent of merchants and shoppers. The market offers local specialties you can sample, such as pickled garlic, anchovies, marinated onions, olives, olive oil, cheese, salami, fresh bread, seafood and the catch of the day, along with colorful vegetables and fruits. You can also explore the narrow streets of the town center and see the church of Saint-Nazaire, with its Byzantine-inspired icons.
Next you depart for a medieval hilltop village in Provence called Le Castellet, meaning "the little castle." This small stone village has winding, steep, narrow streets and wide views over the surrounding countryside. Tiny shops line the streets where craftsmen work in front of you, creating artwork, paintings, and decorative objects for sale in local galleries. Many merchants sell Provencal goods such as tablecloths, blankets, pottery, bags, leather items, and lavender.
You have free time for lunch (meal not included). Consider the traditional crepes accompanied by cider, a local specialty worth trying.
Later this afternoon you continue to Cassis, on the eastern edge of Calanques National Park. It is a small fishing port at the foot of Cap Canaille, one of the highest maritime cliffs in Europe at nearly 1,300 feet. The site offers wide views over the coastline and a good photo opportunity.
An optional boat ride is available to see the Calanques from the sea. Alternatively, your driver guide can take the crest road, stopping at viewpoints over the Calanques, the sea, and the coastline stretching into the distance. Please note that the ridge road is closed on Sundays and in poor weather.
At the end of your excursion, you return to Toulon.
Mobility: Folding wheelchair OK, some sites may be inaccessible (advance notice required)
