Aix-en-Provence & Cassis Calanques Shore Excursion from Toulon

This full day Toulon shore trip visits the famous city of Aix en Provence where you take a driving tour and visit the old town. Then in the afternoon you visit Cassis where you have the option to take a boat trip to see the Calanques.

After meeting your guide at the pier in Toulon, you depart for Aix-en-Provence. Upon arrival, you take a driving tour of the city center including the Cours Mirabeau. This 440 meter tree lined street was built in the 17th century under Archbishop Mazarin, and is well known for its fountains, including the Nine Cannons Fountain built in 1691, and its cafes.

You then pass through the Quartier Mazarin, with its unique 17th century chessboard pattern and many aristocratic townhouses with their Baroque facades and beautifully carved wooden doors. Much of the old town, or Vieil Aix, is pedestrian only and you will walk through it. The labyrinth of narrow streets lead you to the 17th century Town Hall, the Archbishop's Palace, and St. Sauveur Cathedral with its Romanesque cloister.

While you are in Aix en Provence, you have free time for lunch.

This afternoon you have the chance to visit Cassis. Cassis is the type of unspoiled fishing village that first lured the jet set to the Riviera years ago. Surrounded by white limestone cliffs, umbrella pines, and vineyards descending directly into the sea, Cassis is friendly and unpretentious. The port is a curve of pastel houses and colorful wooden fishing boats in front of the outdoor terraces of seafood brasseries. There are few designer shops in the narrow streets, and no oversized yachts to gawk at. Instead you're likely to see fishermen, locals, and international tourists who shun the overcrowded beaches of St. Tropez.

While in Cassis, you can choose to explore the town on foot, or if you wish, you can take a boat trip to see the crystalline azure coves called Calanques and the white cliffs that surround them. Cassis sits at the eastern edge of the Calanques National Park, established in 2012 as the first national park on the French mainland since 1979. Don't miss this opportunity to see this natural beauty and feel the spray of surf on your face.
