TOUR DESCRIPTION FAQ

Acropolis & Athens Highlights Shore Excursion from Piraeus / 4 Hours

This half day Piraeus shore trip allows you to see Athens' main sites in Greece including the Acropolis, the Olympic Stadium and the Parliament Building on Constitution Square. It is a nice option for first time visitors or those with limited time available. Your private guide provides door-to-door service, with pickup and drop-off right at your ship in Piraeus.

After meeting your private guide, you drive to the Acropolis, which means the high city, for a visit to the foremost symbol of the glory of ancient Greece. Climb the smooth marble steps on the Sacred Way as visitors have for centuries. History's doors open before you as you reach the Propylaea, a masterpiece of classical architecture, serving as the entrance to the complex of buildings. You'll see the Temple of Athena Nike (Wingless Victory), and the Erectheum, with its classical Porch of Maidens (Caryatids). Stand in awe of what is considered the most perfect example of classical architecture in the world, the Parthenon, designed as a shrine to Athena and at one time housing a massive gold and ivory statue of the warrior goddess. Your licensed guide is with you throughout the journey to explain the things other tourists miss.

Looking down from the Acropolis you'll see the two ancient theaters in its shadow, the Greek theater of Dionyssos where the masterpieces of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes debuted to delighted audiences, and the theater of Herod Atticus, a grand Roman theater restored and used today for concerts and classical plays during the summer Athens Festival.

Next you enjoy a driving tour of Athens where you see the top sights including the Olympic Stadium, birthplace of the modern Olympic Games in 1896 that returned in 2004. You'll see the Parliament Building with its traditionally dressed Evzones soldiers guarding the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, Constitution Square, Hadrian's Arch and much more.
After your Athens shore excursion you are returned to your ship in Piraeus cruise port.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is four hours really enough time to see the Acropolis without feeling rushed?
Yes, for a focused visit. Four hours covers the drive up to the Acropolis, time to walk the Sacred Way to the Parthenon and Erechtheum, plus a driving tour past the Olympic Stadium and Parliament. What it doesn't include is a full interior museum stop or a leisurely wander through the Plaka, so if you want that too, our 8-hour Best of Athens tour builds in more time.
Why do the guards outside the Greek Parliament wear a kilt?
That's the Evzones, Greece's ceremonial Presidential Guard, in the traditional fustanella. It's a pleated white kilt made from about 30 meters of cloth, and it's said to carry 400 pleats, one for every year of Ottoman occupation before Greek independence in 1821. Your guide will point them out near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Can someone with mobility issues still do this tour?
A folding wheelchair works for most of the route, but the Acropolis itself isn't wheelchair accessible; it's an uphill walk over ancient stone. Let us know about mobility needs in advance so your guide can plan accordingly. There is an observation area that is wheelchair accessible.
Why does pricing change if my only day in port is a Sunday?
Standard rates don't apply on Sundays or Greek public holidays. Contact us for Sunday pricing and availability before you book if that's your situation.
What happens if my ship's schedule changes on tour day?
You're covered by our Back-to-Ship Guarantee. Your private guide and driver plan the day around your ship's actual departure time, not a generic schedule.

I just wanted to let you know what a fantastic time we had in Greece and Turkey. The drivers and guides were prompt, smartly dressed and very courteous. Their English was excellent and knowledge of the areas we were touring, superb. The vehicles were also very clean and comfortable. I cannot thank you enough for making our visits to these places a once in a lifetime experience. I will certainly be recommending you to all my friends.

I just wanted to give you a big thumbs up for everything that happened to make this trip into Athens perfect. The transfers went off without a hitch and all of your people were great. I did not hear one negative word of feedback. Im not sure who our guide was yesterday she said her name was Mirta but she was outstanding - the city tour and the guide of the museum was great and the lunch stop was a really big hit. The food was terrific and we had a really superb time. Today the bus to the pier was there right on time and in fact here we sit at the pier and we are early. It was a superb experience using private shore tours please give my thanks to everybody involved it was great!

The guide was absolutely superb. Alexandra was nice, intelligent, and informative. We loved her. Turkey was also wonderful. I am very impressed with the way you handled things. We had set up a couple tours elsewhere with someone else and were not happy at all. Thanks for everything.

All of our tours were just fantatic.  In Athens, the Acropolis was simply awesome and we had a wonderful time in the Plaka.  I wish we could have had lunch in one of those roof top bars.  That would have been awesome.  In Katakolon, the farm you recommended was so nice, peaceful and the hosts were so welcoming.  The other tours in Greece were great but those were the highlights for us.  Thank you also for telling the guide to walk slowly - my mother appreciated it.

We just got back in Venice and on our way to Rome. The shore excursions went very well. The local guides were good and flexible to the needs of the group as some have mobility issues. Thank you for the good service. Rest assured that we will highly recommend your company to our friends. Till our next trip, Best regards,
