TOUR DESCRIPTION

Palma Shore Excursion

This Palma de Mallorca shore trip includes the Highlights of Palma, including the Cathedral and Bellver Castle. You also visit the Caves of the Dragon, one of the most popular sites on the island.

After meeting your guide you drive to Porto Cristo, which is located on the other side of the island. Porto Cristo is a small fishing village and you enjoy a short stop there before visiting the Cave of the Dragon.

Hidden inside the caves is one of the largest subterranean lakes in the world. You enjoy a boat ride on the lake as you listen to classical music. This cave system was first discovered in 1878 and today it is without doubt one of the island's most outstanding attractions. You will be taken through most chambers of the underground cave system which is over a mile long and in some places the height of the caves are over 75 feet high. You will marvel at the spectacular rock formations reflected in water pools and lakes. Stalagmites and stalactites form a continuous display of fantastic patterns in cave after cave. The unequaled beauty of the caves is further enhanced by the lighting.

On the return trip to Palma, you have a short stop to see one of the islands pearl factories. Pearls have been produced here since the late 1890s. Your guide will explain the production and you have a chance to see some of the beautiful items which are the result. If you would prefer, it is possible to visit a craft workshop dedicated to goods made by olive wood or a glass blowing workshop.

When you get to Palma, you enjoy a short walking tour and then free time for lunch (meal not included).

After lunch you visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria, referred to as Le Seu. This is by far the most important building on the island one of the top attraction. It dominates the old town of Palma, sitting above the city walls and just next to the sea, giving the appearance that it is rising from the sea. The cathedral is part of the Diocese of Majorca and was built in the Levantine Gothic style.

Finally you visit the gothic style Castillo de Bellver which was built in the 14th century. This circular castle was used as a military prison in the 18th and 19th centuries and today it is another of the top attractions on the island. Sitting high on a hill, you will enjoy the panoramic views of Palma and the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range which runs along the west coast of the island. You will have time to explore the hidden corners of this well preserved castle before returning to the port of Palma de Mallorca.
