TOUR DESCRIPTION

Marseille Shore Excursion

This full day Marseille shore trip visits three treasured towns in Provence including the fishing village of Sanary-sur-Mer, the charming hilltop village of Le Castellet and the seaside resort of Cassis. This tour is our most popular itinerary in southern Provence.

After meeting you driver guide you'll start with visiting the fishing village of Sanary-sur-Mer. You have a chance to explore the daily market which was once elected the most beautiful market in France. The town's atmosphere is unique, thanks to the colorful ancient wooden boats floating in the harbor which are symbols of the southern Provence coast.

You’ll experience the relaxed way of life of the locals, listening to their southern accent as they chat with merchants and buy fresh products. The market offers numerous local specialities that you can sample such as pickled garlic, anchovies, marinated onions, olives, olive oil, cheese, salami, fresh bread, seafood and the catch of the day, not to mention colorful vegetables and fruits. You can also explore the narrow streets of the town center and admire the stunning church of Saint-Nazaire, with its giant icons and byzantine inspiration.

Next you depart for a typical medieval hilltop village in Provence called Le Castellet, meaning “the little castle”, This tiny stoned village has winding, steep and narrow streets and spectacular sceneries. It is absolutely charming, with tiny shops where craftsmen work in front of you, creating artworks, paintings, decorative objects, and exhibiting in galleries. Many merchants sell Provencal goods such as tablecloths, blankets, plaques, pottery, bags, leather items, lavender, fragrance, and much more.

You have free time for lunch (meal not included). Consider the delicious traditional crepes accompanied by cider, a treat you may wish to try.

Later this afternoon you continue to Cassis, located in the Calanques National Park. It is a delightful little fishing port nestled at the foot of one of the highest maritime cliffs in Europe at nearly 1200 feet high. The site offers magnificent views of the landscape creating a picture perfect photo opportunity.

An optional boat ride is available to admire the spectacular Calanques from the sea. Alternatively, we’ll drive along the crest road stopping at viewpoints that offer breathtaking panoramas of the Calanques, the sea, and the rugged coastline stretching as far as the eye can see. Please note that the ridge road is closed on Sundays and in poor weather.

At the end of your excursion, you return to Marseille.

Mobility: Folding wheelchair OK, some sites may be inaccessible (advance notice required)
