TOUR DESCRIPTION

Gourdon & Grasse Perfumery Shore Excursion from Cannes

This Cannes shore trip visits the perched hilltop village of Gourdon in the Alpes Maritimes, with stops at a historic perfume factory in Grasse and a candy factory in the Gorges du Loup. In addition to enjoying stunning views from Gourdon, your driver-guide brings you to the Fragonard perfume factory and the Florian candy factory, where you learn how local flowers are turned not only into perfume, but also into sweets.

After meeting your driver-guide, you depart for the town of Grasse, known around the world for its perfume. Grasse is home to three historic perfume houses that still offer free guided tours today: Galimard, founded in 1747 by a supplier to the French royal court; Molinard, founded in 1849; and Fragonard, founded in 1926 inside a building that dates to 1841. Your tour includes a stop at the Fragonard factory, where you learn how flowers grown in the surrounding hills are turned into perfume.

Next you drive deep into the Gorges du Loup, a dramatic river canyon with waterfalls along the route, and reach the perched village of Gourdon at an elevation of about 2,500 feet. The village grew up around a castle first built in the 9th century to defend the valley from Saracen raids. Centuries later, when the castle was rebuilt as a noble residence, its terraced gardens were laid out by Andre Le Notre, the landscape architect who designed the gardens at the Palace of Versailles. You have free time to explore the Provencal village, its medieval stone buildings, and the castle grounds, with views stretching toward the Riviera coastline.

After exploring Gourdon, your final stop is the Florian candy factory in Pont-du-Loup. The Florian name dates back to 1921, when a chocolate factory of that name opened in Nice; the Pont-du-Loup site itself began as a perfume factory before becoming a confectionery in 1949. You'll tour the factory and learn how local flowers are also turned into candies and jams, with free samples of specialties like rose flavored jelly and jasmine flavored candy, along with the traditional Provencal nougat.

At the end of the day, you are returned to the port in Cannes with wonderful memories and a few treats to take home.

The shore trip was great! It was so much better to have a private tour, as opposed to the bus tours that the cruise line contracted with. We saw more sites than would have been possible any other way, our driver was knowledgable, and an expert driver, and she (Sabrina) got us back to the ship on time! She even had time to drop my older son off early so he could watch the USA-China basketball game on TV in his cabin. If I find myself doing another cruise in Europe, I will contact your company to set up the shore trips.

We took a private tour of Monaco and Eze during a cruise that stopped in Cannes. Our driver, Pierre, was amazing. He was so courteous, friendly, and helpful. He made us feel like we were traveling with a good friend. He picked us up right on time, offered very interesting information on the ride and had some great suggestions on where to go. A very memorable trip!! I feel lucky to have found Private Shore Trips. I
