TOUR DESCRIPTION

Tallinn Old Town Shore Excursion

This tour is for guests who want to spend their entire port day inside Tallinn's Old Town rather than splitting time with a site outside the city.

Your guide meets you at the pier and drives around the medieval city walls to Toompea, the Upper Old Town, where the walking tour begins. Vanalinn, as locals call the Old Town, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, recognized as one of the most complete surviving medieval trading cities in northern Europe, and your guide explains the layered German, Scandinavian, and Russian influences visible in its architecture.

You walk the cobblestone streets beneath Toompea Castle, whose oldest fortifications date to the 13th century even though the pink Baroque facade seen today was added in the 18th century, when the site became the seat of Estonia's Russian governors. In Lossi Plats, or Palace Square, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral has stood since 1900, its onion domes and richly decorated interior a striking contrast to the older Lutheran architecture nearby.

From Palace Square you continue to the Gothic St Mary's Cathedral, known locally as the Toomkirik or Dome Church, Estonia's main Lutheran church and historically the church of its German noble families. Inside, funeral coats of arms from the 17th through 20th centuries line the walls above burial stones dating as far back as the 13th century; guests who climb the bell tower are rewarded with sweeping views over the city's rooftops. Note that your guide cannot lead you through the church during services, generally Sunday mornings and at midday daily.

Descending into the Lower Town, you look back up at towers and steeples rising above red tile roofs before reaching the Holy Ghost Church, which retains much of its 14th century appearance, and the Gothic Town Hall, completed in 1404 and the only surviving Gothic town hall in northern Europe. Your tour finishes on Katariina Gild street, the Old Town's most picturesque lane, where craft workshops set inside 15th to 17th century houses let you watch glassware, ceramics, and textiles being made by hand before your guide returns you to the pier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Tallinn tours include a Back-to-Ship Guarantee?
Absolutely. All Tallinn tours booked through us include the Back-to-Ship Guarantee. If a delay caused by our tour operator keeps you from returning to the ship on time, we'll arrange and cover your transportation to catch up with the ship at its next port of call. To qualify, your tour needs to be scheduled to return at least 1.5 hours before the ship's departure, and you'll need to be back at the vehicle for every agreed meeting time during the day.
How much deposit is required to book a Tallinn tour?
We ask for a $50 per-tour deposit to hold your Tallinn booking. The remaining balance is due 30 days before your tour date. If your plans change, that deposit isn't refundable, but it stays on your account as credit toward any tour for up to 3 years. Larger groups, custom itineraries, or tours involving flights or overnight stays may carry a bigger deposit and their own terms, which we'll spell out at booking.
What is the cancellation policy for Tallinn tours?
Give us 15+ days' notice on a Tallinn cancellation and we'll refund everything except a $50 admin fee. Inside 14 days of the tour date, cancellations become non-refundable. One exception: if your ship simply doesn't call at Tallinn because of weather, mechanical issues, or political unrest, you'll get a full refund less the $50 fee. All cancellation requests need to be submitted in writing by email.
Where do we meet our driver or guide in Tallinn?
Cruise Ship: After leaving the ship at Tallinn, make your way to the main public exit of the terminal. Where a terminal building exists, pass through the arrivals area to the outside pickup area -- cruise staff can direct you. If there's no terminal building, your driver waits dockside. If you can't spot your contact immediately, stay put near your exit and call the local dispatch number in your confirmation. Hotel: Look for your driver or guide right outside the main entrance or in the lobby -- they'll be holding a sign with your group name. Airport: Once you've collected your luggage and cleared customs, head into the arrivals hall -- your driver or guide will be there holding a sign with your group name.
Are entrance fees included in Tallinn tours, and are they refundable?
Wherever the Tallinn tour page indicates it, admission is already built into the price. Keep in mind some venues require timed, skip-the-line tickets that become non-refundable the moment they're purchased. We'll flag any non-refundable entrance fees for you at booking.
Can we customize the itinerary on our Tallinn shore excursion?
A private Tallinn tour is built to flex around what you want to see. Mention any must-see sight to your driver or guide at pickup, and they'll do their best to work it in. Traffic and time constraints can occasionally limit how much we can change, but your guide will always try to keep things personal.

We had great tour. Eero was fantastic. He showed us all the sights, was very good with my dad (who had to use a wheelchair) and even helped us with a little snack at an outdoor caf. A great time!

I have been meaning to get in touch and letting you know that all private tours were right on time even though after reconfirming from the hotel in Copenhagen my German phone never worked, so I was a bit concerned how it would work out but they were all there, were professional and helpful and with the three boys it was the best decision I made about the whole trip to have the private tours. I knew this cruise would not be the perfect itinerary for teen age boys but I think the guides we had made it work, adjusted the programs tour over the city rather than the city tour as it would have given the boys a thrill and me the kind of overview of the city one could not get from a car. I dont mean it complaining, it is more hindsight on my part. I would recommend Private tours to anyone with a small group, as the flexibility and advantage of passing all the long long line ups for all the larger groups and sneaking in ahead of them was worth alone the extra cost. On top of it the flexibility was just priceless for the boys. I have less good things to say about the cruise line, found the ship not well organized and not at all helpful for anyone not wanting their tours and giving the rest of us wrong information about landing procedures at least 12 the time. Well, I have learned a lot and even though I will never be a total cruise fan, the baltic itinerary is really very informative if one prepares oneself as there was little or no advanced information on the destination ports given to us from the ship itself. So, thanks for your helpful service, I would recommend booking private tours to anyone!! You are welcome to quote my recommendation if needed.

We really enjoy all the tours that you booked for us. Really made our trip that much more enjoyable and we were able to cover a lot more ground. All the tour guides were absolutely wonderful. I will definitely refer you to anyone that is going to Europe. I just wish you covered more than Europe!
