Your guide meets you at the pier for a short drive around the ancient city walls into Tallinn's Lower Old Town. Here you get a brief walking introduction, including views across Old Town Hall Square, enough to place the city's German, Scandinavian, and Russian influences in context before moving on. From the Old Town you drive to Rocca al Mare, named for a summer manor built here in 1863, now home to the Estonian Open Air Museum. Established in 1957 and opened to visitors in 1964, the museum gathers nearly 80 original historic buildings, disassembled and rebuilt here with their original materials, across 72 hectares (about 175 acres) of seaside parkland. Your guide walks you through farmsteads, fishing and inland village clusters, wooden churches, 18th and 19th century windmills, and a working village tavern, explaining how rural Estonian life was actually lived here for close to 300 years. It is a quiet, unhurried contrast to the Old Town's stone streets, and gives a fuller picture of the country beyond its capital before you return to the pier.
