TOUR DESCRIPTION

Tallinn Shore Excursion

This full day Tallinn shore trip is the most popular tour for first time visitors. You enjoy a comprehensive walking tour of Tallinn's Upper and Lower Old Town and also explore the Rocca al Mare park, featuring traditional Estonian farm buildings.

Your guide will meet you at the pier and you'll drive around the ancient city walls to the Upper Old Town of Tallinn, where your private walking tour begins. Vanalinn, as the Old Town of Tallinn is known, is one of the best preserved medieval cities in all of Europe, and your guide will introduce you to the fascinating mix of German, Scandinavian and Russian influences evident here.

You'll walk along cobblestone streets in the shadow of the looming Toompea Castle, which was originally built in the 13th century. You'll see the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky with its priceless collection of icons which has dominated Lossi Plats (Palace Square) since its construction in 1900.

From Palace Square you'll continue to the Gothic St. Mary's Cathedral, known by locals as the Toomkirik or Dome Church. This is the main Lutheran church in Estonia and was traditionally the church of Estonia's elite German nobles. The striking interior is known for its many funereal coats of arms dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries and burial stones from the 13th to the 18th centuries. For those interested in panoramic views, you can climb the steps of the bell tower for amazing views of the city. Please note that your guide will not be able to guide you through the Dome Church if religious services are in progress (generally Sunday mornings and at noon daily).

As you walk into the Lower Town, you enjoy the panoramic a view of towers and steeples rising above the red-tiled roofs, and have the chance to browse through local shops. You'll see the Holy Ghost Church, a structure which retains much of its 14th century appearance, and also stop to admire Tallinn's oldest civic building the Gothic Town Hall completed in 1404.

Next you'll visit the famous Katariina Gild street, the most picturesque lane in the Old Town. You enjoy a short amount of free time to explore a collection of craft workshops where artists use traditional methods to create and sell local crafts. Expect to see glassware, quilts, ceramics, jewelery and other hand made goods. These craft workshops are located in the small 15th to 17th houses so that visitors can see the artists working. Its a wonderful Medieval atmosphere not found in many places today.

After your Tallinn tour, you have free time in the town square for lunch (meal not included).

After lunch you depart for the Rocca al Mare Open Air Museum. This wonderful open air museum is a collection of nearly 100 traditional Estonian farm buildings that have been moved to a 200 acre park. The park is in a scenic seaside area that highlights examples of typical rural life as it has been lived in Estonia for last 300 years. Your guide will show you examples of farmsteads, fishing and inland villages, churches, 18th and 19th century windmills as well as a working village tavern. The order and rhythm of everyday country life in Estonia will be interpreted for you as you explore this quiet village park setting.

At the end of the tour, you return to the pier in Tallinn.

It was just FABULOUS! And we could not be more thrilled to have had the chance to meet these wonderful people who took us through their cities and showed us with such pride how rich their lives and their history has been. We ate it up and tried to memorize every bit of information. They were truly  professional tour guides  and gave us everything we could possibly handle. We loved it. Everything went perfectly and our flights over and back went without a hitch. (which is always a bit by luck) We had a huge suite at the front of the ship with all kinds of special perks for the cruise and we spent most of the time in the room because of the view. The weather was perfect except for a little light rain in Germany. But we had sunshine in all the other ports and we understood it was a big deal in Russia. My parents were troopers and they LOVE their private shore trips! They brag about this type of touring to everyone they know and they are, by far, your biggest fans! We can not wait to call you again to book as many tours as possible with  Travel with Friends . Because that is truly what it is Travel With Friends! I would love to write again for your web page. Just give me some time to recover. ) Sincerely - A very happy traveler!

Everything was more than expected, coaches were comfortable, guides were very good, lady from Stockholm on second place, and the very best Sibylle from Hamburg. I will (have already) tell about you guys to all of my friends, and also to some travel agents in Croatia that I know. The prices are little high, but the service is excellent.

I have been meaning to get in touch and letting you know that all private tours were right on time even though after reconfirming from the hotel in Copenhagen my German phone never worked, so I was a bit concerned how it would work out but they were all there, were professional and helpful and with the three boys it was the best decision I made about the whole trip to have the private tours. I knew this cruise would not be the perfect itinerary for teen age boys but I think the guides we had made it work, adjusted the programs accordingly and the only exception would have been the Russian guide. But then St.Petersburg was from the start the most challenging city and I wish we could have done just a 112 hour heli tour over the city rather than the city tour as it would have given the boys a thrill and me the kind of overview of the city one could not get from a car. I dont mean it complaining, it is more hindsight on my part. I would recommend Private tours to anyone with a small group, as the flexibility and advantage of passing all the long long line ups for all the larger groups and sneaking in ahead of them was worth alone the extra cost. On top of it the flexibility was just priceless for the boys. I have less good things to say about the cruise line, found the ship not well organized and not at all helpful for anyone not wanting their tours and giving the rest of us wrong information about landing procedures at least 12 the time. Well, I have learned a lot and even though I will never be a total cruise fan, the baltic itinerary is really very informative if one prepares oneself as there was little or no advanced information on the destination ports given to us from the ship itself. So, thanks for your helpful service, I would recommend booking private tours to anyone!! You are welcome to quote my recommendation if needed.

We really enjoy all the tours that you booked for us. Really made our trip that much more enjoyable and we were able to cover a lot more ground. All the tour guides were absolutely wonderful. I will definitely refer you to anyone that is going to Europe. I just wish you covered more than Europe!
