TOUR DESCRIPTION

Kotor Shore Excursion

This full day shore tour visits the most popular sites in Montenegro including the old town of Kotor, the charming village of Perast, the island of Our Lady of the Rocks and resort village of Budva. You explore the fjord by boat and then travel along the Mediterranean coast in a private vehicle.

After meeting your tour guide at the pier in Kotor, you walk to your vehicle and drive to the town of Perast. This small town is a wonderful example of baroque architecture. While you are in Perast you have a short walk among buildings and villas which were built during the city's prosperous years of the 17th and 18th centuries. There were 14 churches built during that period, among them is the unfinished parish church of St Nicholas, a Venetian-Romanesque variation of baroque style. Its bell tower is 179 feet high and has an inscription which proudly reads that the Turkish threat ended after the Venetians conquered Herceg Novi and Risan. Although it is open to the sky, the great apse of the main altar makes a significant contribution to the coastline of Perast.

After your walk in Perast you cruise to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks. According to legend, the small man-made island was made over the centuries by the seamen who kept an ancient oath which says that after returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the bay. Over time, the small island gradually emerged from the sea. You will visit the small Byzantine style church which was built in 1667. The interior of the church was decorated by Tripo Kokolja, a famous 17th-century painter from village of Perast. Your guide will point out the famous icon of Our Lady of the Rocks on the altar.

Later you boat back to Perast and then drive to Kotor where you enjoy a walking tour walk through the maze of medieval Kotor, its bustling market and among beautiful Renaissance buildings. The well preserved fortified walls of Kotor are nearly 3 miles long and it is considered one of the world's historic values. This afternoon you could consider walking on the wall uphill towards the castle.

Your tour includes a visit to the Cathedral of St. Tryphon which was constructed in 1166 and built on the remains of a former temple from the 9th century. You will see the remains from 14th century frescoes and the valuable treasury with both local and Venetian golden works dating from the 14th to the 20th centuries.

Next you drive to the ancient town of Budva which is the most famous resort in Montenegro. While you are in Budva you have free time for lunch (meal not included) before enjoying a walking tour.

Budva is considered to be one of the oldest settlements on the Balkan Peninsula. The old town of Budva also lies on a small island that was linked to the land by a sandbar and in time it turned into a peninsula. The old town is surrounded by ramparts originating from the 15th century including a medieval fortification system with city gates, defense walls and towers. Within the walls the town is a combination of small narrow roads and little squares with valuable monuments of different Mediterranean cultures.

Later this afternoon you drive back to the pier in Kotor.

I have to say that all 6 in our group agreed Tom, our guide in Kotor, was their favorite guide in all of the ports of call we visited on our cruise----and there were many good ones in the 10 days we were on the Oceania Italian Escapade cruise onboard Marina. He was totally charming, had a great sense of humor, and was passionate about the history and culture of his country. The drive was spectacular, and our driver was very careful to take the turns carefully to maximize our comfort. What an amazing setting for the city on a very long fjord with mountains all around! We had frequent photoviewing stops along the way and really enjoyed the visit with the ham and cheese maker in the mountain town of Cetinje. Had the best cappuccino of the whole trip at the bar there as well. We also found the museum of Nicholas I in Njegusi charming and interesting-----all in all a wonderful day in Montenegro. Forgot to mention that our tour of the old walled city earlier in the day spurred us on to return to climb the wall to the chapel on the side of the mountain before we had to be back to the ship to head out of the harbor. Thanks for connecting us with Tom and for a great tour!

Kotor is beautiful and the service provided was excellent! In fact, one of the best guides I have ever had and transport quality as well! I would like to know about what options you could offer me to Vienna. We will be a group of 4 people and we will be in Vienna for 3 whole days March 2, 3 and 4. After that, we can talk about Prague, Budapest and Salzburg.Thank you! Best wishes

Thanks for the e-mail. The trip went off without a hitch. Every driver and guide that we had were great. I am sure that the trip would not have been the same without the service, care and friendliness of each and every person that we had contact with. We met wives and even mothers of a few of the guides ) Venice would have been a nightmare getting to the hotel after the airport that first day without the pre-arrangements as suggested by you. We were looking in horror as the driver approached a square and said he would be   leaving us here   and we would be getting a water taxi. There were hundreds of people everywhere standing with suitcases!! But he actually led us to the water and we were surprised and   thrilled   when we were the only ones getting on the boat. (we had already seen more than a few stuffed with people). That driver took us to our first hotel and it took at least 35 minutes by water travelling in open water and then down the small streets to get us to the first hotel. Our first look at the city of Venice!! It set the whole Venice adventure for me and my husband who by now had taken 400 pictures. The arrangements to get to the ship and back were also of the same high quality. The tours of each country again were the best and I think we had the guides who were the most passionate and loved their individual Countries thus providing us with a tour through their eyes, knowledge and love of their Country. You know there is one thing I would request but I am not sure of the policy. We got the e-mails of most of the guides as we took pictures that we have already e-mailed but I dont have or misplaced the ones for Athens and I have misplaced the one for the Verona drive Lino Sorrentino...are you able to ask for those and if they agree send those to me. I have pictures of us and the guide in Athens done by the photographers from the ship of the 3 of us at the Acropolis that I am sure she would like. (We were also lucky enough to actually be by the Greek Presidents Residence when he came..our guide had only once in her life time seen him and he was waving to the people as his car turned into the driveway. There were only about 8 people on the road once security locked it down. She was very happy about this.) Sorry you probably did not want a narrative. But Ken the trip was great. Thank you for all your hard work and diligence in getting everything done and getting the guides. And THANKS for suggesting the airport transfers!! We have been looking at what to do for next years adventure and we will of course contact you. We tell everyone about the private tours and how much better the experience is than going on a bus with 40 other people and then following someone carrying a coloured stick of some kind) Thanks again )
