This full day shore tour visits the most popular sites in Montenegro including the old town of Kotor, the charming village of Perast, the island of Our Lady of the Rocks and resort village of Budva. You explore the fjord by boat and then travel along the Mediterranean coast in a private vehicle.
After meeting your tour guide at the pier in Kotor, you walk to your vehicle and drive to the town of Perast. Perast's wealth in the 17th and 18th centuries came largely from its sea captains, and the town was also home to a maritime academy that trained naval officers for the Venetian fleet, a legacy still visible in the captains' waterfront palazzos, including the Bujovic Palace, that line the shore. While you are in Perast you have a short walk among these baroque buildings and villas.
After your walk in Perast you cruise to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks, a small artificial island that seamen built up over centuries by laying a stone in the bay after each safe return from sea. Inside the Byzantine style church, built in 1667, a small museum displays paintings by 17th-century Perast artist Tripo Kokolja along with silver votive tablets left by grateful sailors over the centuries, offered in thanks for safe passage.
Later you boat back to Perast and then drive to Kotor where you enjoy a walking tour through the maze of medieval Kotor's old town, part of the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You pass through the old Arms Square and the town's narrow lanes, keeping an eye out for the many cats that have become an unofficial symbol of Kotor, said to have been welcomed centuries ago by sailors and merchants for keeping the harbor warehouses free of rodents.
Your tour includes a visit to the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, consecrated in 1166. The cathedral's treasury holds the "Glorious Head" reliquary, a silver casing for the saint's skull crafted in stages between the 13th and 17th centuries, along with a second reliquary shaped like a small casket, completed between 1539 and 1551.
Next you drive to the ancient town of Budva, the most famous resort in Montenegro. While you are in Budva you have free time for lunch (meal not included) before enjoying a walking tour.
Budva's old town sits on what was once a small island, later linked to the mainland by a sandbar that widened into the peninsula you see today. Within the Venetian era walls, don't miss the Citadela, a fortress first documented in the 15th century on a site believed to have served as an ancient acropolis, with sweeping views over the old town's red tile rooftops and the Adriatic beyond.
Later this afternoon you drive back to the pier in Kotor.
