This Kotor shore trip starts with a walking tour of Kotor's old town, followed by a visit to the charming village of Perast and a boat excursion on the Bay of Kotor.
After meeting your tour guide at the pier, you enter the old town through the Sea Gate, the main entrance built into the fortified walls facing the harbor, and enjoy a walking tour through the maze of medieval Kotor, its bustling market and among beautiful Renaissance buildings. Kotor's old town is part of the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the fortified walls that once protected it run nearly 3 miles (4.5km) up the slope of San Giovanni hill.
Your tour includes a visit to the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, consecrated in 1166 and rebuilt more than once after earthquake damage, including a major restoration following the 1979 earthquake that struck the region. You will see the remains from 14th century frescoes as well as the valuable treasury with both local and Venetian golden works dating from the 14th to the 20th centuries.
After a thorough walking tour of Kotor you take a boat to the charming village of Perast. This small town is a wonderful example of baroque architecture. While you are in Perast you have a short walk along the waterfront promenade among buildings and villas which were built during the city's prosperous years of the 17th and 18th centuries. There were 14 churches built during that period, among them is the unfinished parish church of St Nicholas, a Venetian-Romanesque variation of baroque style with a 179 foot bell tower.
Next you join a 20 minute boat excursion (non-private) which allows you to photograph the island of Our Lady of the Rocks, an artificial island built up over centuries by local sailors and home to a small Byzantine style church built in 1667. After your cruise, you drive back to Kotor.
