You will enjoy walking through the maze of Kotor's medieval center, its bustling market and among beautiful Renaissance buildings. The fortified walls circling the old town run nearly 3 miles (4.5km), reaching up to 20 meters high and 15 meters thick in places, and climb the slope of San Giovanni hill to St. John's Fortress, 260 meters above the town. This afternoon you could consider walking on the wall uphill towards the castle.
Your walking tour includes a visit to the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, consecrated in 1166. According to tradition, the relics of St. Tryphon, patron saint of Kotor, arrived in the city around 809 when a ship carrying them from Constantinople was diverted by a storm, a sign the local Kotor merchant who purchased them took as reason to keep them in the city and build a church in the saint's honor. Your guide will show you the cathedral's distinctive asymmetrical bell towers and the treasury, home to a silver reliquary containing the saint's skull crafted in stages between the 13th and 17th centuries.
Next you visit the Maritime Museum to explore a unique collection representing maritime history of the Gulf of Kotor. The impressive collection includes historical models and pictures of old ships and sailboats, plus many ship parts and old instruments related to sailing.
