This round trip tour focuses on the sites closest to the Dover cruise port: Dover Castle, the Roman Painted House and the White Cliffs of Dover.
After meeting your guide at the pier, you depart for Dover Castle, which sits above the White Cliffs of Dover and has guarded the English coast for more than 20 centuries.
Your castle visit covers its history from the 13th century through the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. You see wartime displays and visit the Secret Wartime Tunnels, once a nerve center for anti-aircraft operations and later prepared as an underground command post for the British government in the event of nuclear war. In the Great Tower, built under Henry II, you step into the royal court of medieval England, with interactive displays and, on some days, costumed characters.
Next you visit the Roman Painted House, the best preserved Roman house on display in Britain. Twenty-five years of excavation across ancient Dover uncovered 50 major structures, and this is the best preserved of them. Built around 200 AD as part of a large mansio, or official hotel for travelers crossing the Channel, it stood outside the naval fort of the Classis Britannica until the fort's expansion in 270 AD, when three of its main rooms were buried substantially intact under the new ramparts.
You then have free time in Dover for lunch (meal not included), shopping, or exploring on your own.
In the afternoon, you visit the White Cliffs of Dover, rising more than 300 feet above the English Channel and stretching 10 miles between Folkestone and Walmer. On a clear day you can see 21 miles across the Channel to France, and the clifftop is home to a wide range of plant and wildlife.
At the end of the day, you are returned to your ship in Dover.
