Visby Old Town Highlights Shore ExcursionThis three hour Visby driving tour is ideal for guests who prefer limited walking but still want to experience the city's medieval history and charm, along with plenty of photo stops. Your guide will tailor the route to your interests and pace. You will drive to several locations around Visby and also stop at a local cafe along the way. Your driver and guide meet you at the pier, and the tour begins at the old Hanseatic Harbor, today known as Almedalen Park, where you get a sweeping view of the medieval city before setting off. From there you drive through Visby's medieval streets, past the town wall and its quiet stone alleys, taking in St. Mary's Cathedral, a viewpoint over the rooftops from the top of town, the 13th-century warehouses along the harbor, one or more of the city's medieval church ruins, and the Botanical Gardens. Your guide can stop at any of these for photos or a closer look. Visby is worth exploring as much for its historical depth as for its present-day charm as a small, clean city where parks, gardens, and flowers abound. History here spans the Viking Age, a flourishing medieval trading period, and the rise of the powerful Hanseatic League, but Visby is just as well known today by its own nickname: the town of roses and ruins. Its unique cultural and historical value earned Visby recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and since the late 19th century its ruins have been protected as historical monuments. The sea wall was first raised in the 12th and 13th centuries, with the town wall added in the early 13th century, and today it stands as the best-preserved medieval town wall in northern Europe, still ringed by dozens of surviving stone towers. Before the tour ends, your guide brings you to a local cafe for a coffee or something similar (drinks not included in the tour price). At the end of the tour, your driver returns you to the pier.
