Visby Countryside & Lookout Point Shore Excursion

This four hour Visby tour includes a driving tour to several locations in Visby where you can stop for photos, then continues into the Gotland countryside to a popular lookout point and a seaside cafe in the former home of Swedish Princess Eugenie.

Your driver and guide meet you at the pier and begin the tour at the old Hanseatic Harbor, today known as Almedalen Park, with a sweeping view of the medieval city as your starting point. From there you drive through Visby's medieval streets, past the town wall and its cozy stone alleys, taking in St. Mary's Cathedral, a viewpoint over the rooftops from the top of town, the 13th-century warehouses along the harbor, one or more of the city's medieval church ruins, and the Botanical Gardens, with stops along the way for a closer look or photos.

Visby is worth exploring as much for its historical depth as for its present-day charm as a small, clean city where parks, gardens, and flowers abound. History here spans the Viking Age, a flourishing medieval trading period, and the rise of the powerful Hanseatic League, and Visby carries its own nickname for it: the town of roses and ruins. Its unique cultural and historical value earned Visby recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and since the late 19th century its ruins have been protected as historical monuments. The sea wall was first raised in the 12th and 13th centuries, with the town wall added in the early 13th century, and today it stands as the best-preserved medieval town wall in northern Europe, still ringed by dozens of surviving stone towers.

After Visby, you drive into the countryside to Hogklint, a limestone cliff and popular lookout point about 4 miles (6km) south of the Old Town, with sweeping views over the sea and back toward Visby in the distance. You then stop for a coffee break at Fridhem, built in the 1860s as a summer residence for Swedish Princess Eugenie, daughter of King Oscar I, and now a seaside cafe where you can sit in the garden and take in the view (drinks not included in the tour price). The cafe serves coffee and other drinks along with cakes, waffles, sandwiches, and salads.

At the end of the tour, your driver returns you to the pier.

• This tour includes stops with uneven terrain, walking at each location, and time outdoors at the Hogklint lookout, so it is not able to accommodate wheelchairs. If you have mobility concerns, please contact us to discuss alternatives.
