St Paul de Vence & Eze Shore Excursion from Villefranche

This Villefranche shore trip visits two of the most celebrated hilltop villages on the French Riviera. Your driver-guide takes you to Saint Paul de Vence, known for its art galleries and medieval walls, and Eze, known for its dramatic views and pedestrian only stone lanes. You have time to explore each village, with free time for lunch.

After meeting your driver-guide in Villefranche, you enjoy a scenic drive to Eze. This pedestrian only medieval village of tiny stone lanes clings to the cliffs over 1,000 feet above the sea, connected to the coast by the Chemin de Nietzsche, a footpath that took on the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's name after his stays here in 1883 and 1884, during which he composed part of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. There is time to walk to the hilltop garden for sweeping views over the sea, browse the boutiques, or enjoy an ice cream. Please note that you must leave the van at the base of the village and walk up a steep hill into town, which is not recommended for anyone with limited mobility; the nearby Fragonard perfume factory is a relaxed alternative if you prefer.

Later in the morning you drive to Saint Paul de Vence. The van parks outside the medieval walls near cafes where you can enjoy a relaxing lunch while watching locals play boules or petanque. After lunch, take a stroll on the cobblestone main street to browse the many art galleries and boutiques that have made this town a magnet for artists for generations. Be sure to ask your driver-guide about La Colombe d'Or, the inn that opened as a simple cafe in 1920 and became a hotel in 1930; artists including Picasso, Matisse, Miro and Chagall are said to have traded paintings for their stay here, and many original works still hang on its walls today. You can also walk the town's medieval ramparts and into the old cemetery, where Chagall himself is buried, or stop at the Maeght Foundation gallery if modern art interests you.
