About VCE Airport Before Marco Polo Airport existed, Venice's original airport was the Nicelli Airfield on the Lido, opened to civil aviation in 1926 under engineer Renato Morandi. It became Italy's first commercial airport and the departure point for the country's first scheduled passenger service, a thrice weekly flight to Vienna that began that August using a four seat Junkers F13.
