This Rotterdam tour is for guests who want a half day option and the chance to explore the port city of Rotterdam itself, visiting both the historic and modern parts of the city, including the famous Cube Houses.
After meeting your guide at the cruise pier, you travel by high speed water taxi to Delfshaven. This neighborhood sits on the right bank of the Nieuwe Maas River and grew over time as an outskirt of the historic port of Delft before becoming part of Rotterdam in the late 1800s. The area was largely spared World War II bombing, so it still has its old cobblestones and small canals. Delfshaven is also where the Pilgrim Fathers departed aboard the Speedwell in 1620, on the journey that eventually brought them to America. Your guide shares this history as you walk through the neighborhood.
Next you take a relaxed tram ride into the center of modern Rotterdam. This area was badly damaged during the war and rebuilt as a progressive, modern city. In the city center you see the Cube Houses, designed by architect Piet Blom and built in the early 1980s, which put Rotterdam on the map internationally for its architecture. You have the chance to enter a Cube House and see what it is like to live inside one of these unusual structures. While in the area you also see the Market Hall, St. Laurens Church and the Old Harbor.
This tour ends in the city center, where you can enjoy lunch and explore on your own, making your own way back to the ship with advice from your guide. Alternatively, you can request that the tour end back at the cruise pier. A credit card is needed to use the public transit system, so please bring one with you.
