TOUR DESCRIPTION

Sintra & Pena Palace Shore Excursion from Lisbon

This private Lisbon shore excursion to Sintra is built around a single, unhurried visit to Portugal's most famous palace, rather than trying to fit in the whole Sintra region in one day.

After meeting your licensed guide at the Lisbon cruise port, you drive about 18 miles (29km) northwest into the forested hills of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, a landscape of estates and gardens that has drawn Portuguese royalty and artists for centuries.

Your visit starts with a walk through Pena Park, the woodland surrounding the palace, past hidden lakes, exotic trees, and quiet trails. The highlight of the day is the guided visit inside the National Pena Palace itself. Commissioned by King Ferdinand II and built between 1842 and 1854 on the ruins of a monastery destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, the palace is considered one of Europe's finest examples of Romantic architecture, part of the UNESCO listed Cultural Landscape of Sintra since 1995. Its colorful towers and Moorish inspired terraces were designed by Prussian architect Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege, and your guide explains the history behind its unusual mix of Gothic, Manueline, and Moorish styles as you explore the royal rooms.

After the palace, you continue to the historic center of Sintra, with free time to browse boutiques, sample Portuguese pastries, or have lunch on your own (meal not included) among its cobblestone streets and cafes.

In the afternoon, you drive through Sintra Natural Park, passing several of the region's celebrated estates, including Quinta da Regaleira with its mysterious gardens and initiation well, the Seteais Palace, and Monserrate Palace. Depending on timing, your guide may also add a stop at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, where cliffs rise about 140 meters above the Atlantic.

Please note
  • To minimize waiting times at Pena Palace, we recommend selecting an 8:00 AM or 8:30 AM departure whenever your cruise schedule permits. Early morning visits typically provide the best experience before larger crowds arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Pena Palace painted such bright colors?
Those yellow, red, and pink facades are original to King Ferdinand II's 1840s design, though they actually faded to grey over the following century before being restored to their vivid original colors by the late 20th century. It's one of the most photographed palaces in Europe because of exactly that boldness.
What was on this site before the palace was built?
A monastery, going back to the Middle Ages, built after a reported vision of the Virgin Mary on the hilltop. It was largely destroyed by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and King Ferdinand II acquired the ruins in 1838 to build what became Pena Palace.
Is Cabo da Roca included, or is that extra?
It's an optional add depending on time and your interest. Ask your guide about including a stop at Cabo da Roca, continental Europe's westernmost point, in place of some free time in Sintra.
How much walking is involved at Pena Palace?
You'll walk through Pena Park before reaching the palace itself, so it's an active visit with some uphill sections. Comfortable shoes are worth it here.
Is lunch included in Sintra?
No, but you'll have free time in Sintra's historic center to grab a light lunch on your own before continuing through the natural park.

We booked a few tours at last minute from our cruise ship as our Oceania shore excursions were pretty bad. We arranged our trip through Steven by email and Internet was spotty on the ship. He was quick to respond and was able to customize our trip for the day. We had 3 couples and Ynne was our guide. He was the best guide that we had had during our 12 day trip.
