TOUR DESCRIPTION

Mdina, Rabat & Mosta Shore Excursion from Valletta

This Valletta shore excursion visits three historic towns near the center of Malta: Mdina, Rabat and Mosta. You'll take short walking tours of each, plus an interior visit to St. Paul's Catacombs.

After meeting your private licensed guide, you drive to Mosta. At the heart of this small town stands the Rotunda, a basilica dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its dome is modeled on the Pantheon in Rome and is among the largest unsupported domes in Europe. On April 9, 1942, a German bomb pierced the dome during Mass and skidded across the floor without exploding, missing a congregation of roughly 300 people.

From Mosta you continue to Rabat, home to St. Paul's Catacombs. These underground burial chambers date to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD and were used by early Christian and Jewish communities. Carved directly into the rock, some chambers include round stone tables where families gathered for a farewell meal honoring the dead.

Finally you cross the moat into Mdina, the walled medieval city that served as Malta's capital before Valletta was built. Wandering its narrow, winding streets past Baroque limestone facades and carved wooden balconies, you'll pass the city's Baroque cathedral and climb to the bastions for panoramic views over the Maltese countryside. Small horse drawn carriages still clatter through the quiet lanes, and photographers will find no shortage of material.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour wheelchair accessible?
No. Mdina's medieval streets, Rabat's underground catacombs, and Mosta's church steps involve uneven surfaces and stairs, so this itinerary is not suitable for wheelchair users. Contact us to discuss alternative options.
Do we need to dress a certain way for the Rotunda or St. Paul's Catacombs?
Shoulders and knees should be covered to enter the Rotunda of Mosta, since it remains an active place of worship. St. Paul's Catacombs have no dress code, since they are a museum site rather than a church.
How big is the Rotunda of Mosta's dome?
Modeled on the Pantheon in Rome, the dome measures roughly 122 feet (37m) across on the inside, one of the largest unsupported domes in Europe.
What happened when the bomb hit the church in 1942?
A German bomb pierced the dome during an afternoon Mass on April 9, 1942, skidded across the floor, and failed to detonate. None of the roughly 300 people inside were hurt.

We were 2 and a half hours late in arriving at the airport where we were to be picked up for a 4 hour excursion which was scheduled to end by 2pm but the tour operator allowed for an extension of the tour till 3pm without extra charge. We had good guides clean and fairly new vehicles. Itineraries were interesting and flexible.

Everything went perfectly throughout the entire trip. I could not have asked for anything better with regard to price, quality, guides and buses. Ill make sure and add a good recommend to your facebook blog when I return. Please feel free to use me for references. As someone who has traveled for years, been a travel agent for over 18, and have used many tour companies, I can be quite critical and jaded. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about my experience with PST or with the companies you booked. Thanks again for everything.

Everything went very well on our Malta tour. Our guide was very helpful. We certainly found private tours more enjoyable than bus tours. I would certainly recommend your tours to people I know. We have arrived back. Our Ashdod tour was also brilliant. Every thing went well and I certainly would recommend it to other travelers.
