TOUR DESCRIPTION

Arctic Fox Center & Isafjordur Bay Shore Excursion

This private shore excursion departs directly from the Isafjordur cruise pier and explores Isafjardardjup, the fjord system that forms the heart of Iceland's Westfjords peninsula.

After meeting your guide at the pier, you drive along the winding shoreline of Isafjordur Bay, stopping first at the Kambsnes viewpoint for an overview of the fjord and surrounding mountains. The route continues to Hvitanes, where a resident seal colony can often be seen resting along the rocks. A short distance further is Litlibaer, a turf house built in 1895 and now restored as a small museum, where you can walk among the ruins of the surrounding croft or stop for waffles and tea in the traditional Icelandic style (not included).

On the way back toward Isafjordur, you can stop at the Arctic Fox Center, housed in the historic Eyrardalsbae farmhouse in the nearby village of Sudavik. The center is dedicated to the Arctic fox, Iceland's only native land mammal, and its outdoor enclosure often has fox cubs visible to visitors (admission not included).

The tour returns to the pier in Isafjordur at the end of the visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Arctic fox significant in Iceland?
The Arctic fox is Iceland's only native land mammal, believed to have arrived by crossing sea ice from Greenland at the end of the last ice age, long before humans settled the island. The Westfjords remain one of the best places in Iceland to see them in the wild.
What is a turf house like Litlibaer?
Turf houses were Iceland's traditional building style for centuries, using stacked turf and stone for insulation against the harsh climate in a landscape with little timber. Litlibaer, built in 1895, is one of the few in the Westfjords preserved in its original form.
Are the Arctic Fox Center and waffles at Litlibaer included in the tour price?
No, admission to the Arctic Fox Center and any food or drink at Litlibaer are optional extras paid on site, not included in the tour price.
What should I wear for this tour?
Warm layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer are recommended even in summer, along with comfortable walking shoes, since weather in the Westfjords can change quickly.
Can we add a stop to our Isafjordur tour that isn't on the standard itinerary?
A private Isafjordur tour is built to flex around what you want to see. Let your driver or guide know about a must-see spot right at pickup, and they'll try to make it happen -- though traffic and scheduling sometimes cap what's possible. Either way, they'll keep the day as tailored as they can.

Also Available:

›Dynjandi Waterfall & The Westfjords - A 5 hour tour to Dynjandi, one of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls, through dramatic Westfjords scenery.

The tour was excellent, the guide was knowledgeable, pleasant and flexible in meeting our requests (eg short lunch). Certainly better than being in a big bus tour with all the other passengers. Thanks!

The transfer went well! The driver was great! He talked the whole time telling us funny stories and he seems to be following a lot of things going on in the US. His name was Thor. I would request him for anyone going to Iceland.
