TOUR DESCRIPTION

Dynjandi Waterfall & Westfjords Shore Excursion from Isafjordur

This private shore excursion departs directly from the Isafjordur cruise pier and explores Isafjardardjup, the fjord system that forms the heart of Iceland's Westfjords peninsula.

After meeting your guide at the pier, you drive along the winding shoreline of Isafjordur Bay, stopping first at the Kambsnes viewpoint for an overview of the fjord and surrounding mountains. The route continues to Hvitanes, where a resident seal colony can often be seen resting along the rocks. A short distance further is Litlibaer, a turf house built in 1895 and now restored as a small museum, where you can walk among the ruins of the surrounding croft or stop for waffles and tea in the traditional Icelandic style (not included).

On the way back toward Isafjordur, you can stop at the Arctic Fox Center, housed in the historic Eyrardalsbae farmhouse in the nearby village of Sudavik. The center is dedicated to the Arctic fox, Iceland's only native land mammal, and its outdoor enclosure often has fox cubs visible to visitors (admission not included).

The tour returns to the pier in Isafjordur at the end of the visit.

Please note
  • Even in the middle of summer, warm clothing is recommended for this tour. Waterproof hiking boots or similar sturdy shoes are strongly advised, since trails near the waterfall can be wet from overspray.
  • Mobility: Due to uneven surfaces, steps, and walking distances, this itinerary is not suitable for guests using wheelchairs. Please contact us for alternative sightseeing options, including private driving tours that may better accommodate your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should we wear for this tour?
Warm clothing is recommended even in summer, along with waterproof hiking boots or similar sturdy shoes, since trails near Dynjandi can be wet from the waterfall's overspray.
Is the hike to the top of the waterfall difficult?
Is the hike to the top of the waterfall difficult?
What does "Dynjandi" mean, and how tall is the waterfall?
Dynjandi means "thunderous" in Icelandic, describing the roar of the water. It falls a total of 100 meters (330 feet) across seven tiers, making it the largest waterfall in the Westfjords.
Who was Jon Sigurdsson, and why does Hrafnseyri matter to Iceland?
Jon Sigurdsson was born in Hrafnseyri on June 17, 1811, and led Iceland's 19th century independence movement. His birthday is celebrated today as Iceland's National Day. A museum with a replica turf house opened at his birthplace in 1980.
Are entrance fees included in Isafjordur tours, and are they refundable?
Entrance fees are included wherever it's noted on the Isafjordur tour page. A few attractions require timed skip-the-line tickets, which turn non-refundable as soon as they're bought -- we'll let you know about any of these at booking.
Can we customize the itinerary on our Isafjordur shore excursion?
Flexibility is one of the real perks of a private Isafjordur tour. Let your driver or guide know about a must-see spot right at pickup, and they'll try to make it happen -- though traffic and scheduling sometimes cap what's possible. Either way, they'll keep the day as tailored as they can.

Also Available:

›Isafjordur Bay & Arctic Fox Center - For wildlife instead of a waterfall, this 4 hour tour stays closer to the port with seal watching on the fjord and a visit to the Arctic Fox Center, Iceland's only research station for its sole native land mammal.

The tour was excellent, the guide was knowledgeable, pleasant and flexible in meeting our requests (eg short lunch). Certainly better than being in a big bus tour with all the other passengers. Thanks!
