TOUR DESCRIPTION

Godafoss Waterfall Shore Excursion from Akureyri

This Akureyri shore excursion visits the stunning Godafoss waterfall, known as the Beauty, then gives you the choice of how to spend the rest of your time around Akureyri's old town.

After meeting your guide in Akureyri, you start the journey toward Lake Myvatn. About halfway there is a stop at Godafoss, one of Iceland's most photographed waterfalls. The name means waterfall of the gods, and your guide will explain the legend behind it. The falls are about 40 feet high and 100 feet wide.

From Godafoss you drive back toward Akureyri over the Vikurskard mountain pass, with views over Eyjafjordur and the town below. Akureyri is Iceland's second largest urban area outside the capital region and is considered the heart of North Iceland.

Your guide will offer a few options for how to spend your remaining time. You might explore Akureyri's old town on foot, or visit the Botanical Garden, among the northernmost botanical gardens in the world, first laid out as a public park in 1912 and formally established as a botanical garden in 1957. Another option is Laufas, a heritage turf house on the shore of Eyjafjordur mentioned in records soon after Iceland's Settlement era and home to parish priests since at least 1047, though the buildings standing today date mostly to the mid-19th century, with the church built in 1865. Some guests prefer the Christmas House, open year round, where you can browse local handicrafts and learn about Icelandic Christmas traditions.

At the end of your tour your guide returns you to your cruise ship in Akureyri.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should we wear on this tour?
Warm clothing and comfortable walking shoes, ideally hiking shoes, even in summer. Iceland's weather changes quickly, and both Godafoss and the old town sites involve walking on uneven ground.
How do we decide which old town option to pick?
Your guide will walk you through the choices, the Botanical Garden, Laufas turf house, or the Christmas House, based on your interests and how much time is left after Godafoss. It's fine to request a specific one when you book.
Why is Godafoss called the "waterfall of the gods"?
According to tradition, around the year 1000 AD Iceland's lawspeaker threw statues of the old Norse gods into the falls after the country formally adopted Christianity, giving the waterfall its name.
Is Laufas' turf house really as old as it looks?
The site itself has been a church and farming settlement since shortly after Iceland was first settled, with priests recorded living there since at least 1047. The turf buildings you actually walk through today are younger, built mostly in the mid-1800s, with the church dating to 1865.

Our trip was wonderful! Our pick up at the airport, two tours, and transportation to the pier all went well. I would definitely use your company again for future travel needs.

The whale watching on the rib boat was fun, very cold though! The guide wasnt holding a sign with my name so took a little to figure out it was her. We enjoyed it.

Sorry for the delay in replying.. I was not getting emails However, as you can tell by my replying, Im back successfully  --- I did hear from the local operators early on that morning and the return transfer to Heathrow worked like a charm.   In fact, we got on the road at 630 am exactly and were at Heathrow by 820 --- plenty of time for everyone to check in comfortably.     I think the only issue was the Hotel to Port transfer.    THANKFULLY, I requested to have the transfer pick up time a little earlier.  As it happened, traffic (as always for London) factored in and they were more than half an hour late.. For that group movement,  I think they may have misunderstood how the passenger counts were supposed to be ---- they thought the 8-pax mini van was solely for luggage.  It was uncomfortable with them squeezing bags in the 30-pax coach and the leftover in the other vehicle.  As it happened, we sent one person in that car with the driver and every seat  including the jump seat usually reserved for a tour guide  was filled on the coach.    Traffic was still an issue and it ended up being over 90 minutes before we even reached the highway --- London is so big and the roads are all city driving until you can access the main system out of the city.  Was nerve-wracking --- but, silver lining --- the huge global snafu with the system effected countless people, including those (not related to us!) arriving for the cruise and who still had to travel from the airports..  this chain reaction allowed for the cruise line to delay sailing in order to wait for the late-comers.  Our group arrived around 330 which was remarkable, seeing how much time we consumed just in getting there.     That was the only hiccup. Our guided sightseeing tour of London was wonderful --- Konrad, our Blue Badge Guide --- absolutely fantastic  did a great job for us --- everyone who participated in the tour loved it and commented very favorably.    Despite iffy weather reports, we dodged rain the entire trip except for brief sprinkles  not bad for England, Scotland , Iceland and especially Ireland.   I want to mention that I appreciated the contact between the local operators and me. I received text and phone messages as needed, which is a huge relief  instead of waiting around and not sure who youre looking for ---- this eased my nerves and enabled me to communicate more comfortably with my group members. Thank you so very much for helping with the arrangements.      Except for the little snafu with the first transfer  which was resolved  all else went like clockwork.

We did enjoy ourselves and I would highly recommend your tour company to anyone. The driver was really nice and very efficient getting us to all of the places that we wanted to see in the short time that we were in London. The guide was quite knowledgeable and friendly.
