This full day Toulon shore trip visits the top of Mont Faron and the old town of Toulon, plus the small resort towns of Sanary and Bandol. There is a chance to taste the local wine if you choose to do so.
Your driver guide will meet you at the pier in Toulon and depart for the cable car ride to the top of Mont Faron, at 1,900 feet. Opened in 1959, the Toulon cable car is unique on the Mediterranean coast. You'll enjoy dramatic views of the sea and surrounding area and visit the memorial to the 1944 Allied landings in Provence.
When you return from the mountain you have time to explore one of the liveliest Provencal markets, held every morning in Toulon. You walk the pedestrian streets of the Old Town, through passageways and terraced sidewalks, taking in the local architecture and wall murals. You'll see Sainte Marie Majeure Cathedral and the Cours Lafayette with its 18th century "Three Dolphins" Fountain.
Next is free time for lunch (meal not included).
In the afternoon you depart for the fishing village of Sanary-sur-Mer, where the Mediterranean coast's cliffs and clear blue sea come into view. Sanary's port is the hub of activity, filled with red, blue, and green fishing boats rather than large yachts. Outside, older men play petanque, and portside cafes offer a place to rest and take in the scene. Bakeries line the cobblestone streets. If you are in port on a Wednesday, Sanary's weekly market brings more than 300 stands selling foie gras, baby artichokes, strawberries, scented soaps, herbs de Provence, and olive oil.
Next your driver guide brings you to the nearby town of Bandol. Vines have grown on Bandol's sheltered slopes since Phocaean Greek settlers arrived in the 6th century BC, though the Bandol AOC itself, one of France's oldest wine appellations, was formally established in 1941. This is one of the best known wine regions of southern Provence, and its crisp rose wine is closely associated with the region. You can taste the offerings of local producers at the Maison des Vins de Bandol.
You return to the port of Toulon later this afternoon.
Please Note: The cable car is optional and is not included in the price. Expect to pay about 9 Euro per person. Otherwise, your driver guide will drive you to the top of Mont Faron. The cable car operates daily, though the memorial is closed on Mondays.
