This full day shore excursion visits the city of Vikings, Roskilde, where you will learn about an exciting time in the region's history that dates back over 1,000 years. Highlights include the Viking Ship Museum and Roskilde Cathedral.
Upon arrival in Roskilde, your first stop is the Viking Ship Museum, Denmark's national museum for ships and boat building from prehistoric and medieval times. Around the year 1070, five Viking ships were deliberately sunk in Roskilde Fjord to block the main channel and protect the town from an attack by sea. These ships were excavated in 1962, revealing five different vessel types, from cargo ships to warships. The museum was built overlooking the fjord, and on your tour you will see reconstructions of these original ships.
After a break for you to enjoy lunch on your own, you will visit Roskilde Cathedral, which sits on a hill and offers wonderful views over the fjord. Construction began in the 12th century, and it was Scandinavia's first Gothic cathedral built of brick, a style that later spread across much of northern Europe. Its twin spires dominate the skyline of the town. Inside, the cathedral has served as the burial place of Danish monarchs since the 15th century, with roughly forty kings and queens interred there. In 1995 the cathedral was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it remains one of the largest cathedrals in Denmark and a top attraction in Roskilde.
Later in the afternoon you return to the pier in Copenhagen.
