TOUR DESCRIPTION

Flexible Copenhagen - 5 Hour Shore Excursion

This five hour shore excursion is for those who want the most flexibility with their Copenhagen itinerary. When you meet your driver guide you discuss your interests and the places you wish to visit. Your driver guide will help you maximize your time based on your interests and traffic conditions. Some people like this option so they can spend a lot of time in one location. Others like to try to see as much as possible in the time available.

This tour has a 60 mile (100km) round trip driving radius from the pier, roughly double the 3 hour version, which opens up day trip destinations beyond central Copenhagen. Closest to the port is central Copenhagen itself: Nyhavn's harbor, Tivoli Gardens, Amalienborg Palace, and the Stroget pedestrian shopping street, all about 2 miles (3km) away with almost no driving required. Farther out, Roskilde, home to the Viking Ship Museum and Roskilde Cathedral, is about 20 miles (32km) from the port, roughly 33 minutes each way. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, known for its coastal setting and modern art collection, is about 23 miles (37km), roughly 35 to 40 minutes each way. Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerod, a Renaissance palace now housing the Museum of National History, is about 24 miles (39km), roughly 31 minutes each way. Kronborg Castle in Helsingor, the UNESCO World Heritage fortress known as the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet, is about 29 miles (47km), roughly 40 minutes each way, the farthest of these options and close to this tour's 60 mile round trip cap.

None of these day trip destinations, Kronborg, Roskilde, Louisiana, or Frederiksborg, are covered by any of our fixed-itinerary Copenhagen tours, so this flexible tour is currently the only way to reach them with Private Shore Trips. Popular combinations include Roskilde's Viking Ship Museum and Cathedral together, since both sit in the same small city; central Copenhagen sights like Tivoli Gardens and Nyhavn together, given how little driving they require; or Kronborg Castle on its own, since its round trip distance uses most of this tour's driving radius.

This option tends to suit guests who want a genuine day trip outside the city rather than more time downtown, repeat Copenhagen visitors who have already covered the city center and want to see the Danish countryside, and mixed-interest groups choosing between royal history at Kronborg or Frederiksborg, Viking history at Roskilde, and modern art at the Louisiana Museum.

With 5 hours total, central Copenhagen destinations need almost no driving, leaving most of the 5 hours for sightseeing. The farther destinations each use roughly 1 to 1.5 hours of round trip driving, leaving 3.5 to 4 hours at the destination itself. Kronborg's round trip distance is close to this tour's 60 mile cap, so most guests who choose Kronborg spend the whole visit there rather than adding a second stop.

Please note that this "Flexible Itinerary" includes a driver guide who provides commentary while you are in the vehicle and then you have free time in the stops of your choice. Your driver guide can make recommendations based on your interests. It is important to understand that with a flexible itinerary, we cannot guarantee you can see everything you would like in the amount of time you have chosen. Traffic conditions and weather ultimately affect the driving time to the places you wish to visit. If you decide you want to visit the interior of any sites, then you are expected to pay the applicable entrance fees in local currency.

Travel Tip for our Clients: If you are visiting Copenhagen from a cruise ship, this is an excellent tour if you would like a flexible itinerary but also want free time to enjoy a stop at leisure, such as Tivoli Gardens or lunch in the Old Town. During your stops you can rest assured that your driver guide is waiting for you when you want to move on to the next stop or go back to the port.

If you'd like to do some shopping instead, you can walk along the pedestrian street of Stroget, with high-end shops like Burberry, Louis Vuitton, and other international brands, or Danish brands like Georg Jensen and Royal Copenhagen. At the eastern end of Stroget, on Kongens Nytorv, you'll also find Magasin du Nord, Copenhagen's grand historic department store.

If you cannot find what you are looking for, our Copenhagen tours and Copenhagen shore excursions can also be customized to fit your needs. If you have a larger group, we can offer you a private Copenhagen tour using a mid-size bus or full-size coach. Please contact us with any questions or to receive a customized quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the flexible itinerary work?
You meet your driver guide at the pier or your hotel and discuss your interests. Your guide then helps you build and adjust the day's plan based on your priorities and current traffic conditions.
Is there a limit on how far we can travel?
Yes. This tour has a maximum round trip driving distance of 60 miles (100km) from the pier, enough to reach Kronborg Castle, Roskilde, the Louisiana Museum, or Frederiksborg Castle, none of which are covered by our fixed-itinerary tours.
Can we combine a day trip like Kronborg Castle with time in central Copenhagen?
It's possible but not recommended. Kronborg's round trip distance is close to this tour's 60 mile cap, so adding a second stop leaves very little time at either one. Most guests who choose Kronborg spend the whole 5 hours there.
Can we go shopping on this tour?
Yes. The Stroget pedestrian street is within central Copenhagen and can be built into your itinerary alongside or instead of the day trip destinations.
Are entrance fees to museums or attractions included?
No. Entrance fees at Kronborg Castle, the Viking Ship Museum, the Louisiana Museum, Frederiksborg Castle, or any other site are paid locally and are not included in the tour price.

We had a wonderful time in Copenhagen! We would love to return for more time to enjoy all the beautiful city has to offer. Sven, our tour guide, and our driver were terrific. Sven was rather easy to understand and knowledgeable about his city. They made the most of our limited time before boarding our ship.
