TOUR DESCRIPTION

Copenhagen Old Town Walking Shore Excursion

Your private guide meets you at the pier for this three-hour walking tour through the heart of Copenhagen's Old Town, one of the best-preserved city centers in Scandinavia and the place where Copenhagen life has unfolded for more than 800 years.

Much of what you'll see took shape under King Christian IV, Denmark's longest-reigning monarch, who transformed Copenhagen with new districts and ambitious building projects during his reign from 1588 to 1648. Walking through the Old Town today, you'll pass Copenhagen City Hall and see how his vision still shapes the city's skyline.

Your guide leads you past Christiansborg Palace on the small island of Slotsholmen, seat of the Danish Parliament, Supreme Court and Prime Minister's Office. The ruins of Bishop Absalon's original 1167 fortress, the very beginning of Copenhagen, are preserved beneath the palace.

Nearby stands Børsen, Copenhagen's 17th-century former stock exchange and one of the city's best-known landmarks. The building is currently undergoing a major restoration following a 2024 fire that destroyed sections of the roof and brought down its famous dragon-tail spire, and your guide can point out its history and what's being rebuilt.

From here you continue into Christianshavn, a 17th-century district of canals and houseboats modeled on Dutch canal towns, where the Church of Our Saviour rises above the rooftops, its spire wrapped in a distinctive spiral staircase that winds around the outside.

The tour finishes near Nyhavn, Copenhagen's postcard-famous 17th-century harbor lined with colorful townhouses, cafes, and old sailing ships, before you return to the pier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Copenhagen walking tour start?
Your private guide meets you directly at whichever Copenhagen cruise terminal your ship uses — Langelinie, Oceankaj, or Nordre Toldbod — so there's no need to arrange transport to a separate meeting point.
Is the Copenhagen walking tour wheelchair accessible?
How old is Copenhagen's Old Town?
How old is Copenhagen's Old Town?
Copenhagen traces its origins to 1167, when Bishop Absalon built a fortified castle on the island now occupied by Christiansborg Palace. The ruins of that original fortress are preserved beneath the palace today.
Why is Børsen (the Old Stock Exchange) under restoration?
A major fire in April 2024 destroyed large sections of the 17th-century building and brought down its famous dragon-tail spire. Reconstruction is underway using traditional building methods, though it's expected to take years to complete.

We had a wonderful time in Copenhagen! We would love to return for more time to enjoy all the beautiful city has to offer. Sven, our tour guide, and our driver were terrific. Sven was rather easy to understand and knowledgeable about his city. They made the most of our limited time before boarding our ship.
