TOUR DESCRIPTION

Flexible Croatia Shore Excursion from Dubrovnik

Most Dubrovnik day tours lock you into a fixed stop order booked weeks in advance. This flexible tour works the opposite way: your guide adjusts the day based on what you want to see and, on this particular route, on how the Croatia to Montenegro border crossing is running that morning, something no fixed itinerary booked in advance can account for.

A family on this tour wanted to see Kotor, Montenegro, but had read that the border crossing can be unpredictable in peak summer, sometimes adding two to three hours each way. Their guide checked conditions that morning and found the wait was already running long, so instead of risking hours stuck at the border, they pivoted the day to Ston and Slano, still getting a full countryside day of medieval walls, seafood, and wine tasting. On a different day, with a clear border, another guide might make the opposite call and head for Kotor, since the flexible format lets that decision get made with the actual day's conditions in hand, not weeks ahead of time.

This 8 hour tour has a wider reach than our 4 hour Flexible Dubrovnik tour. Closest to the port, about 2 miles away, is Dubrovnik's Old Town and the Mount Srd cable car. Cavtat, a coastal town in the Konavle region, is about 11 miles from the port, and Osojnik, a hillside village, is about 7 miles away. Farther out, Ston, home to one of the world's longest defensive wall systems and known for oysters and wine, is about 33 miles from the port, roughly 55 minutes each way. Kotor, Montenegro, a UNESCO listed walled town on a dramatic bay, is about 57 miles from the port, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes each way in clear conditions, though the Croatia to Montenegro border crossing can add anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the season and time of day. A valid passport is required to cross into Montenegro.

Popular combinations include the Old Town paired with Mount Srd for guests who want the full day in the city without rushing; Ston and Slano together, since both sit along the same coastal road; or Kotor on its own, since its round trip distance and variable border wait typically use most or all of the 8 hours. Guests who choose Kotor should plan to spend the day there rather than adding a second stop, since the round trip alone, in good conditions, is close to 3.5 hours before any time in Kotor itself.

This option tends to suit guests who want a genuine day trip beyond Dubrovnik rather than more time in the Old Town, mixed-interest groups choosing between Croatian countryside and a cross-border day in Montenegro, and guests who would rather have their guide's day-of read on border conditions than commit to Kotor weeks in advance.

With 8 hours total, the closer destinations, the Old Town, Mount Srd, Cavtat, and Osojnik, need relatively little driving, leaving most of the day for sightseeing. Ston's round trip uses about 2 hours of driving, leaving 5 to 6 hours at the destination, enough to pair it with a shorter stop in the Old Town if desired. Kotor's round trip, including a variable border wait, can use 3.5 to 7 or more hours depending on the day, which is why most guests treat it as a single-destination day.

Please note that this flexible itinerary includes a guide who provides commentary in the vehicle and at each stop, with recommendations based on your interests. With a flexible itinerary we cannot guarantee you will see everything you would like within your chosen time, since traffic, weather, and border conditions affect driving times. If you decide to visit the interior of any sites, entrance fees are payable locally in cash.

Mobility: a folding wheelchair can be accommodated, though some sites may be inaccessible. Please give advance notice if this applies to your group.

If this itinerary does not fit your plans, our Dubrovnik shore trips and Dubrovnik shore excursions can be customized. For larger groups, we can arrange a private tour using a mid-size bus or full-size coach. Contact us with any questions or for a custom quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the flexible itinerary work?
You meet your guide at the port or your hotel and discuss the towns and sites you want to visit. Your guide builds the day around your priorities, adjusting for traffic, weather, and, if Kotor is on the table, that morning's border wait.
Can this tour reach Kotor, Montenegro?
Yes. Kotor is about 57 miles from the port, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes each way in clear conditions, though the Croatia to Montenegro border crossing can add significant time in peak season. A valid passport is required to cross the border.
Can we combine city sightseeing in Dubrovnik with a countryside destination like Ston?
Yes. Ston's round trip uses about 2 hours of driving, leaving enough time to pair it with a shorter stop in the Old Town. Kotor's round trip and variable border wait typically use most or all of the 8 hours on their own.
What happens if the border wait to Montenegro is too long that day?
Your guide checks conditions before committing to the drive and can suggest a Croatian alternative, such as Ston and Slano, if the wait is running long, so the day isn't lost sitting at the border.
Are entrance fees included?
No. Entrance fees to Ston's walls, Kotor's old town, or any other site are paid locally and are not included in the tour price.

I contacted Ken well in advance of the trip for a work group celebrating a big anniversary. The communication was amazing. The entire trip was flawless and the guides were professional, on time and so incredibly knowledgeable of the particular areas. Their English was perfect and we were all amazed at their level of knowledge. They were always ready to make recommendations for lunch and snacks as well as tips and tricks.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Thank you for contact me.  We all had a great time with your company.  We found your guides to be ontime and the vehicles were clean and perfect and the AC worked!  We did take a ship tour Palma and that was aweful - especially after being spoiled with private tours in Italy, Spain and France.  Our 17 day sailing went very smooth.   Ill write a nice review on trip advisor.  The guide in La Rochelle was the most wonderful lady.  She was a sommelier and she had us tasting the best wines.
