This full day, 8 hour private tour combines Dubrovnik's Old Town with an afternoon in the Konavle countryside. Your licensed guide meets you at the pier, and you begin with a round-trip ride on the Dubrovnik cable car, climbing to the summit of Mount Srd, more than 1,300 feet above sea level, for panoramic views of the city walls, rooftops, the sea and the surrounding mountains.
Back down from the cable car, you drive to the Pile Gate, where a statue of the city's patron saint, St. Blaise, greets visitors, and continue on foot along the Stradun, the Old Town's main marble-paved promenade. Your walking tour includes the Franciscan Monastery, where you visit its pharmacy, operating continuously since 1317 and widely regarded as the oldest still-operating pharmacy in Europe, and Dubrovnik Cathedral and its Treasury, built between 1671 and 1713 with a main altar painting of the Assumption of the Virgin attributed to Titian, dating to around 1552.
In the afternoon you drive south into the Konavle region, whose name comes from the man-made water channels that diverted the area's rivers to power hundreds of old water mills, once making the region a major producer of grain, wine and olive oil. Your first stop lets you walk among the channels beneath a canopy of shade trees, where you may see people in traditional folk costume and a working mill. Here you have a traditional Croatian meal cooked "under the iron bell," a method where meat or fish, vegetables and potatoes are slow-roasted under a heavy domed lid set over hot coals.
Afterward you visit a Konavle-style home that has belonged to the Glavic family for generations, for a glimpse of rural Croatian life a century ago. The family welcomes you as guests and explains how they produce grape brandy, olive oil and wine using traditional methods, and your visit includes a tasting of the local wine and brandy. Homemade products and local handwork are available to purchase if you wish.
At the end of the day, your guide returns you to the ship in Dubrovnik.
