TOUR DESCRIPTION

Porto & Wine Tasting Shore Excursion

This private Porto shore trip includes a tour of Porto's historic city center to see her most famous monuments, including a visit to the Se Cathedral. Then following a lunch break you visit a wine cellar to learn about and taste port wine, a must for your visit to Porto.

After meeting your guide you start with a beautiful drive along the ocean towards the historic center of Porto. During your drive you will see the Cheese Castle, the trendy Foz district and the the Arrabida Bridge.

Once you are in the center of Porto your city tour takes you to the Se Cathedral. This is one of the oldest monuments in Porto, located in the Batalha district, it sits next to the walls that once protected the city. This is one of the highest points in Porto so there are nice views to enjoy.

Other sites you will see in the city include the Bolḥo Market, Santa Catarina shopping street, Cl̩rigos Church and Tower, Lello Bookshop, Ṣo Bento Train Station and the Stock Exchange Palace.

The end of your city tour will be at the riverside Ribeira Square where you can enjoy a traditional Portuguese lunch (meal not included) in one of the most beautiful parts of the city.

After lunch, you will drive along the Douro River and over the famous Eiffel inspired Dom Luis Bridge until you reach Vila Nova de Gaia. While you are hear you will visit a famous port wine cellar for a tour and tasting. You will learn all about the production, harvesting and transporting of this unique drink. Of course the tour ends with a tasting and the chance to purchase some bottles if you wish.

On the drive back to the pier you travel on Boavista Avenue, one of the longest avenues in Portugal, where you will view the award winning "Casa da Musica" (House of Music Concert Hall) and see some remarkable stately homes which line this picturesque avenue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the wine tasting on the opposite side of the river from the city tour?
That's actually the whole story of Port wine: since 1756, Port has legally had to age in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Douro River from central Porto, not in the vineyards upriver where the grapes are grown. Your afternoon wine cellar visit takes you into that centuries-old tradition after your morning in Porto's historic center.
Is Sao Bento train station really worth seeing if we're not catching a train?
Yes, it's one of the highlights, not a functional stop; the station is known for its entrance hall covered in thousands of hand-painted azulejo tiles depicting scenes from Portuguese history. It's a quick but memorable stop on the walking portion of the tour.
What kind of wine will we actually taste?
Cellar visits typically include a tasting of two or three Port styles, often a White, a Ruby, and an aged Tawny, so you get a sense of the range rather than just one style.
Is this tour good for people who don't drink alcohol?
The morning city tour of Porto's historic center stands on its own regardless of the wine tasting, and the cellar visit itself is as much about the history and process as the tasting. Let your guide know in advance if you'd like the afternoon adjusted.
Is this a private tour with a private vehicle?
Yes, private throughout, with an English-speaking guide and a private vehicle for the day.
