The centerpiece of the visit is the Royal Carthusian Monastery, known locally as the Real Cartuja. The building began as a royal palace in the early 1300s for King Sancho of Mallorca, and in 1399 it was donated to Carthusian monks, who lived there until the order was dissolved in the 1830s. The monastery is best known today for its connection to composer Frederic Chopin and writer George Sand, who spent the winter of 1838 into 1839 in one of its cells. The couple came partly for Chopin's declining health, and partly to escape the scandal their relationship had caused back in Paris, since they were not married. During their stay, Chopin composed several of his Preludes, and Sand later wrote about their time on the island in her book "A Winter in Majorca." Beyond the monastery, Valldemosa itself is worth the visit on its own. Its narrow stone streets are lined with potted flowers, small cafes, and old stone houses, and the village is also known for coca de patata, a soft, sugar-dusted potato bread that's a local specialty.
