After meeting your guide in Malaga, you depart for Granada, a drive of about 1.5 to 2 hours through the Andalusian countryside. Your tour begins at the Alhambra, one of Europe's finest examples of Islamic architecture and the last great palace of Moorish Spain. Sitting on a ridge overlooking the city, the complex includes a fortress, multiple palaces, gardens, reflecting pools, courtyards, and forests. Your guide explains how the Nasrid rulers, who ruled Granada from the 13th century until 1492, built the Alhambra into one of the most remarkable royal palace complexes in the world.
A highlight for many guests is the Alcazaba, the fortress at the point of the ridge, which offers the best views over Granada and, on clear days, toward the Sierra Nevada mountains. Your visit also includes the Generalife, the Nasrid sultans' summer palace, known for its fountains, shaded walkways, and gardens.
After the Alhambra, you have free time in Granada's historic center, including time for lunch (meal not included). From there you can explore the old town on your own or, with your guide, visit the Royal Chapel and the Cathedral of Granada, one of Spain's finest Renaissance cathedrals. The Gothic Royal Chapel holds the tombs of Queen Isabel and King Fernando, the Catholic Monarchs who united Spain and sponsored Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas. Another option is the Alcaiceria, Granada's former Arab silk market, where local crafts are still sold today.
