Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle & Piran Shore Excursion from Koper

This Koper shore trip visits one of Slovenia's most popular tourist attractions, the Postojna Caves, as well as the nearby Predjama Castle, built into the cliffs. Before returning to the pier you enjoy time for lunch in the charming town of Piran.

After meeting your guide you drive to the Postojna Caves which first opened to the public over 200 years ago and to date has hosted more than 37 million visitors from all over the world. For over 150 years, the Postojna Cave train has been taking visitors around the cave system, allowing you to travel about 3 miles of the underground system during your 1.5 hour tour. You will learn how the cave system was formed and marvel at the many beautiful limestone formations, especially the most popular one, aptly named Brilliant.

Located only a short distance from the Postojna Caves, you have the chance to visit the Predjama Castle, which is located in the middle of a towering cliff. Located almost 400 feet up a high cliff, the castle is listed with the Guinness World Record as the largest cave castle in the world. The castle offers visitors an insight into medieval construction techniques of people who came here looking for safety at the entrance to the cave. Many visitors cannot tell where the man-made walls of the castle end and the natural walls of the cave begin. Those seeking refuge here had a place to hide, storage for food, a source of drinking water, and passageways to other exits. You will certainly be dazzled by the mysterious and impregnable castle which dominates the area.

Later this afternoon you visit one of Slovenia's oldest towns where you enjoy a short walking tour and some free time. Piran dates from Roman times and still retains an Italian flair which you are sure to enjoy today. You have some time to explore narrow streets lined with small houses which give the town some of its special charm. The old town walls were built to protect the citizens from Ottoman incursions and today they are an important attraction for tourists. You have some free time to shop or have lunch in one of the many cafes.

At the end of your Koper shore excursion, your guide will bring you back to the pier.
