This half day Klaipeda shore trip visits the resort town of Palanga, including its Amber Museum, with free time before a driving tour of the port city of Klaipeda.
Lithuania is known as the Land of Amber because the Baltic Sea scatters amber along the country's shoreline, and Palanga became a summer resort in the 19th century for its sandy beaches, pine forests, and mild climate. When you arrive, you stop at a park and walk to the town's Amber Museum, housed in the 19th century palace of the noble Tyszkiewicz family, and its popular botanical gardens. From there you stroll to one of Palanga's beaches for a short chance to search for a piece of amber of your own, then have additional free time in a town lined with tree-shaded streets and small wooden summer bungalows.
From Palanga you drive back to Klaipeda for a driving tour. Klaipeda is a large industrial port city that was ruled by German speaking authorities for centuries and served as a German submarine base during the Second World War, a period that left much of the city destroyed. Your tour focuses on the old German quarter, which has since been restored.
After your tour in Klaipeda, you return to the ship.
