This Klaipeda shore trip visits Nida, a resort town on the narrow spit of land between the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea, with a driving tour of Klaipeda to finish.
The Curonian Spit is a 60 mile sandbank stretching from the Sambian Peninsula in Russia to Klaipeda, Lithuania, home to the highest sand dunes in Europe and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The Baltic Sea lies on one side of the dunes and the Curonian Lagoon on the other. To fully experience the crossing, you begin with a ferry from Klaipeda to Smiltyne, where you meet your vehicle for the drive to the town of Neringa and the resort of Nida, near the Russian border. Along the way you pass lagoons, the famous dunes, and small fishing villages.
In Nida, you visit the Summer Cottage of Thomas Mann, the German novelist and essayist who won the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature for his novel Buddenbrooks and is also known for Death in Venice. The cottage, built in a traditional local style, gives a sense of the writer's life on the spit before you have free time to walk the beach embankments and dunes nearby.
From Nida you drive back to Klaipeda for a driving tour. Klaipeda is a large industrial port city with centuries of German speaking rule behind it, and it served as a German submarine base during the Second World War, a period that left much of it in ruins. This tour takes you through the old German quarter that has since been rebuilt and restored.
At the end of the tour, you return to the pier.
