This 5 hour 45 minute private tour takes you north of Dubrovnik to the historic town of Ston. Your guide meets you at the pier, and as you leave the city you have dramatic views back over old Dubrovnik.
Your first stop is the small coastal village of Slano, where you can walk along the beach or relax with a drink at a local cafe. From there you continue to Ston, in the southern Dalmatia region. During the era of the Republic of Ragusa, from the 14th through the early 19th centuries, Ston played an essential strategic role as the source of the Republic's salt, mined from works dating back to Roman times and worth a fortune to the city treasury. To protect this resource, a defensive wall roughly 3.4 miles (5.5km) long was built starting in 1358, connecting Ston to the neighboring town of Mali Ston. It is considered the longest complete fortress system in Europe and the second longest in the world, after the Great Wall of China.
You will walk a section of this wall as it climbs the rocky hillside above the town, with fountains, churches, guard towers and public buildings along the way, including the Ston waterline fountain dating from the late 1500s. In Veliki Ston, the larger of the two towns, you have time to visit the salt works and local shops.
After your guided walk, you continue to Mali Ston, known for its oyster and mussel farms, where you sample local seafood and wine before returning to the pier in Dubrovnik.
