Charming Dragor

This private Copenhagen shore excursion visits the charming town of Dragør, one of Denmark's oldest fishing villages, founded in the 1100s and one of the best-preserved historic towns in the country, with 76 protected buildings around its harbor. This is a popular day trip, and you will understand why as you explore narrow cobblestone streets, fishermen's homes with tidy little gardens, and the bustling small harbor.

Dragør's harbor has been the center of the town's life since the Middle Ages, when local fishermen sold their herring catch at the town square still known as Herring Square. Three periods of prosperity, driven by herring fishing, trade, and seafaring, shaped the town you see today. Fishermen still land their catch of flatfish, herring, eel, and cod here, and people gather to stroll along the pier and enjoy the atmosphere.

During your tour you visit the Dragør Museum, housed in one of the Old Town's oldest homes, dating to 1753. Alongside ship models, navigation paintings, and period interiors that tell Dragør's history, the museum displays the fishing boat Elisabeth K571, used in October 1943 to help ferry Danish Jews to safety in neutral Sweden, part of one of the most remarkable rescue operations of the Second World War. It's one of the only boats from that mission still surviving today.

You will also visit the Christian Mølsted Museum, considered Denmark's smallest art museum. Housed in the studio of local marine painter Christian Mølsted (1860-1930), best known for his painting of the frigate Niels Juel at the Battle of Heligoland, the museum sits in the heart of the old village and displays his work.
