This Bilbao shore tour visits the old town, known as Casco Viejo, then heads to the coastal neighborhood of Getxo to see the Vizcaya Bridge, one of the world's great feats of 19th century engineering.
After meeting your guide, you drive to the old town, where you have time to explore medieval Bilbao's cobbled streets and small squares. The old town is often called Las Siete Calles, the Seven Streets, for the seven original cobbled walkways once contained within the city walls. In the 1800s it expanded toward Plaza Nueva, still one of the area's most popular squares today. You have the chance to see Bilbao's cathedral or one of its other churches, and if you like, to sample pintxos, the Basque version of tapas served on skewers, with a glass of wine in one of the neighborhood's many taverns.
From the old town you drive toward the coastal neighborhood of Getxo, passing examples of Bilbao's modern architecture, including the Guggenheim Museum, along the way. In Getxo, you visit the Vizcaya Bridge, better known locally as the Puente Colgante, or Hanging Bridge. Built between 1887 and 1893 by architect Alberto de Palacio, it was the world's first transporter bridge, carrying a suspended gondola across the Nervion River estuary rather than a fixed roadway, so that ships could pass beneath uninterrupted. The gondola still carries cars and passengers between Getxo and Portugalete today. In 2006, UNESCO named the bridge a World Heritage Site, the first Basque monument and the first industrial site in Spain to receive that designation.
At the end of the tour, your guide returns you to the pier.
