Floibanen Funicular & Bergen Shore Excursion

This private Bergen tour starts with a ride up the Floibanen funicular, which climbs to the top of the Floyen mountain massif for sweeping views over the city and its surrounding fjords, one of the most popular things to do in Bergen. From the summit, you look out over the harbor, the colorful rooftops of the old town, and the hills that ring the city before making your way back down for a walking introduction to Bergen itself.

Your guide leads you to the Fish and Flower Market, long the center of the local fish trade, where you get a sense of what Norwegians eat day to day, often with the chance to sample items such as whale or salmon caviar. From there you head into Bryggen Harbor, the wharf lined with wooden gabled buildings that trace back to Bergen's time as a Hanseatic League trading post. Between the middle of the 14th century and the middle of the 18th century, this row of buildings served as a Hansa dock for trading and processing goods brought in from across northern Europe. Many of the roughly 300 year old structures standing today are protected as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking the narrow passages between them gives a real sense of what the medieval port once felt like.

Your walk also takes you past St. Mary's Church, the oldest building in Bergen, dating to the 12th century and the best preserved of the city's three surviving medieval churches.v
